The Daily Show might have rotating set of hosts as Trevor Noah is set to depart Comedy Central stalwart

Multiple hosts might be used on Comedy Central’s The Daily Show in the wake of Trevor Noah’s slated departure from the series.

Three insiders told Variety on Tuesday that the Paramount Global-owned network is looking at a potential rotation of candidates when it resumes airing January 17, though it was unclear if any plans had been finalized.

Noah’s last day at The Daily Show is scheduled for December 8, and Comedy Central said it is looking at a ‘reinvention’ of the long-running show.

The latest: Multiple hosts might be used on Comedy Central’s The Daily Show in the wake of Trevor Noah’s slated departure from the series, sources with the network said

Noah, 38, said he would be departing the show during a September 29 taping, leaving a number of executives and producers surprised, and scrambling to plan the future of the series, sources said.

The network faced similar circumstances seven years ago, when Jon Stewart said in February of 2015 that he was departing the series.

The network said in a statement on the topic, ‘In time, we will turn to the next chapter of The Daily Show, and all of our incredible correspondents will be at the top of that list. Until then, we are focused on celebrating Trevor and thanking him for his many contributions.’

Insiders said that there had been internal support at The Daily Show for supporting comics such as Roy Wood Jr., who has been a correspondent on the show; and Jordan Klepper, who has also been a contributor. Other spotlighted performers on the program include Desi Lydic and Ronny Chieng.

Noah and his team are slated to cover the midterm elections in Atlanta next month, and the show will commemorate Noah’s time at the helm with a December 5 episode that takes a ‘celebratory look back at his greatest moments.’

Noah said in a statement that Paramount exec Chris McCarthy ‘has been an amazing leader and partner who has helped me realize my dream of working not just in front of the camera, but also behind the scenes, producing content which now airs across the Paramount family.’

He added: ‘I’m truly excited to see what the future holds.’

McCarthy called Noah ‘an incredible talent who has left an indelible mark on The Daily Show and we’re grateful for his creative partnership over the past seven years.’

Noah said that ‘so many people didn’t believe in us,’ adding that ‘it was a crazy bet to make’ to anoint him host of the series.

‘I still think it was a crazy choice – this random African,’ he said. ‘I wanted to say thank you to the audience for an amazing seven years. It’s been wild. It’s been truly wild.’

Noah said that traveling recently gave him a better perspective on what he wanted out of his future.

‘I miss learning other languages,’ he said. ‘I miss going to other countries and putting on a show.’

Noah’s departure comes amid a time a number of his colleagues have ended their shows, including Conan O’Brien last year and Samantha Bee earlier this year.
