The five filthiest cities in the United States are run by Democratic mayors, according to a new study.
LawnStarter, a lawn care company with locations across the country, compared the pollution levels, living conditions, infrastructure and consumer satisfaction in 152 of America’s largest cities — excluding those for which there was not enough public data.
It found that Houston, Texas was the dirtiest city in the country, followed by Newark, New Jersey; San Bernardino, California; Detroit, Michigan; and Jersey City, New Jersey. Detroit was also previously named the most stressful city.
All of those cities are run by Democratic mayors, while the city that was ranked cleanest — Virginia Beach, Virginia — is run by a Republican.
For the study, LawnStarter measured each city across four categories: Pollution — which measures things like air quality and greenhouse gas emissions, living conditions — like the percentage of homes with mold or rats and the number of homeless people in the city, infrastructure — like the number of waste facilities, and consumer satisfaction —the percentage of residents who find the city dirty.
It found that Houston, run by Democrat Mayor Sylvester Turner, was the dirtiest.
The city ranked third in the nation on pollution, fourth worst on living conditions, 15th worst on infrastructure and 34th worst in consumer satisfaction.
It also ranks third worst in greenhouse gas emissions from large industrial facilities and has the largest cockroach problem, the study says, citing data from the US Census Bureau.
The median household income in the city is around $56,000, according to the Census Bureau, but 19.5 percent of the population lives in poverty,
Part of the problem, according to an analysis by the Houston Chronicle, is a tax incentive under which city property taxes generated each year are set aside to only be spent on an entire zone.
As a result, the Chronicle reports, the city traps public funds in stable or thriving communities while the needier areas are left with measly funds.
And to deal with a growing homeless population, the city implemented a ‘housing first practice’ last year that moves people straight from the streets and into apartments without first requiring that they wean themselves off of drugs, complete a 12-step program or find a job, according to the New York Times.
‘Despite these conditions, Houston residents are still more satisfied with the cleanliness of their city compared to the residents of 33 other big cities,’ the study found.

How LawnStarter determined the dirtiest cities in America
The lawn care company gathered publicly available data and grouped those factors into four categories: Pollution, Living Conditions, Infrastructure, and Consumer Satisfaction
It then calculated weighted scores for each city in each category and averaged the scores.
LawnStarter then eliminated 48 cities lacking sufficient data for a fair comparison, resulting in a final sample size of 152 cities.
Houston was followed in the study by Newark, New Jersey, which is run by Mayor Ras Baraka, who has campaigned on a platform of police reform.
Baraka has recently accepted his label as ‘woke.’ after facing criticism from Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis for offering a controversial African American history course.
‘I don’t have a problem being woke because the opposite of that is being asleep,’ he said, according to the Washington Examiner.
‘In order to truly understand the complexities of our nation, students must be able to learn about all facets of American history,’ the mayor added. ‘The study of African American history is integral in a child’s educational upbringing as it ensures that they learn a complete picture of what makes America, America.’
Newark is now the third worst city for consumer satisfaction and was ranked fifth for poor living conditions.
Meanwhile, San Bernardino, run by Mayor Helen Tran, ranked as the third filthiest city, earning the number one spot for worst pollution and worst consumer satisfaction.
It was downgraded in this year’s study, after coming in fourth place last year.
Detroit, Michigan was ranked as the fourth dirtiest city in America according to LawnStarter
Rounding out the list was Jersey City, New Jersey. A tugboat is seen in the Hudson River near Jersey City pushing a garbage barge in 2016

In fourth place this year is Detroit, run by Mayor Mike Duggan., where the rate of homicides have spiked over the past year.
It ranked fourth in the LawnStarter study for the worst consumer satisfaction and number nine in pollution.
Rounding out the list is Jersey City, New Jersey — under the direction of Democrat Mayor Steven Fulop.
It ranked second for poor living conditions and number 15 for worst consumer satisfaction.
The cleanest city, though, is Virginia Beach, Virginia, where voters elected Republican Mayor Robert Dyer.
‘For the second consecutive year, Virginia Beach, Virginia outshines all other cities in our ranking,’ the study says.
