The forever home

Eco can be elegant – who knew? Ethical fashion designer Hannah Beaumont’s house is proof that going green needn’t mean skimping on style

Re-purpose, recycle: ‘Interiors fixtures and fittings can look even better over time, so there is rarely a need to buy new,’ says Hannah. The hallway bannister rail and spindles were sourced from a reclamation yard (cheshiredemolition.co.uk). ‘The wood will age beautifully,’ says Hannah. The bike (pashley.co.uk) is an eco-conscious choice for Hannah to commute to work, and also adds Instagrammable appeal to the entrance hall

Feel the pre-love: ‘I love designer pieces but have tried to source as many second-hand items as possible to cut down on product waste and spending,’ says Hannah. The leather sofa in the living room was a gumtree.com find. The vintage floor lamp was from Levenshulme Antiques (theantiquesvillage.com). The John Lewis coffee table was also bought second hand

Keep it simple: Hannah’s home in Didsbury, Manchester, is full of luxe details despite its pared-back appearance. Hannah’s kitchen units were handmade by Yorkshire-based rainbowsfurniture.co.uk. ‘We try to support local talent to cut down on imports,’ she explains. The range cooker, from lacanche.co.uk, is made from more than 90 per cent recyclable materials

Showcase the original features: When Hannah bought her house, it had been divided into three flats. She renovated it as a single home, leaving many original walls bare to expose their beauty and showcase the marks of time. Hints of gold add a decadent touch throughout. Classic pieces such as this cast-iron bath (albionbathco.com) – also loved by Hannah’s poodle Lola – have been chosen so that they will not need to be replaced after any future makeovers

Buy well, buy once: When choosing new pieces for your home, work with brands you trust. Hannah went to respected suppliers with a sustainable conscience who sourced items with the environment in mind. The elegant four-poster bed is from lombok.co.uk. For similar organic bed linen try ecosophy.co.uk

Plan for the future: Remember to take your long-term needs into account. Hannah added a back and side extension to the house with durable features. The fireplace (originally set against the former outside wall) was replicated on the kitchen side using reclaimed materials from the build to save on waste and money

Go bespoke: Planning for storage at the start of a renovation reduces the need to buy new furniture, and provides practical, long-lasting solutions. Hannah’s floor-to-ceiling bespoke dressing room was designed to her specifications by a local carpenter and is home to her fashion collection that sowed the seed for Beaumont Organic. For a similar faux cowhide rug try modern-rugs.co.uk
