The Full Monty cast: 26 years after the boys first stripped off, who stars in the new 2023 series? 

Over two decades have passed since the unlikely group of Sheffield steelworkers stripped off in the face of unemployment.

Peter Cattaneo’s 1997 comedy made waves at the time, winning an Oscar for best original musical or comedy.

Now, the film maintains a cult classic status and is admired for its candid and humorous approach to some of society’s pitfalls.

Years later, we prepare to cheer the men on again, as a major streaming service announces the date for the Full Monty Series and welcomes a whole new generation to the film.

The new eight-part sequel will stream on Disney+ on June 14 and, with the help of the original cast the series will explore the same working class brothers 25 years on. 

The greatly anticipated comeback is set in the same post-industrial city and will explore ‘society’s crumbling healthcare, education and employment sectors,’ according to the synopsis.

Robert Carlyle won the BAFTA for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his performance as Gaz, just a year on from his success as Begbie in critically acclaimed film Trainspotting. 

The Scottish actor has bagged a number of high profile roles including The Beach, Bond movie and 28 Weeks Later.

The actor teamed up with the rest of the Trainspotting gang including Ewan McGregor and Johnny Lee Miller for a 2017 sequel. 

In 2019, along with Trainspotting coworker Danny Boyle, Carlyle appeared in Yesterday where he played John Lennon in Disney’s fantasy series. 

Robert is married to Anastasia Shirley and has three children with the make-up artist: Ava, 20, Harvey, 18, and Pearce, 16. 

Mark Addy – Dave

In one of his first major film appearances, Mark Addy played the likeable and self-conscious sidekick of Gaz.

Prior to his Bafta winning performance, Addy was known for his role in The Thin Blue Line featuring alongside Rowan Atkinson in the police sitcom.

Since then, he played King Robert Baratheon in Game of Thrones, the short-lived performance propelled him to global stardom and achieved him a nomination for the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

After that, he made several TV appearances in Trollied, Atlantis and the much-acclaimed detective series White House Farm. 

The actor has been married to Kelly Briggs since 1996 and has three children.

Before the massive success of Cattaneo’s 90s comedy, Tom Wilkinson was a household name. 

Following his Full Monty appearance, Wilkinson appeared in Shakespeare in Love, The Patriot and starred alongside Jackie Chan in Rush Hour.

He’s appeared in various TV shows from HBO’s John Adams and ITV’s The Earl of Brockenhurst in 2020. 

The actor received an Oscar nomination for his performance as Matt Fowler in The Bedroom and has appeared in a number of notable films from Eternal Sunshine and Batman Begins to SAS: Red Notice.

Steve Huison – Lomper

Since then, Huison has been a regular on popular soaps including Casualty, Emmerdale Farm and Coronation street, where he played Eddie Windass from 2008 to 2011.

He also had roles in Dinnerladies, The Royle Family and  starred in CBBC’s 4 O’Clock Club which first aired in 2012.

He married his long-term partner Theresa in 2003, the pair live a quiet life together.

He continued his comedic success playing Horse in The Full Monty, after that he went on to appear in a number of TV shows including Coronation Street and Death in Paradise. 

He also played a homeless man in the hit Tracey Beaker spin-off The Dumping Ground 

Paul is now 71 and lives in Liverpool.

Hugo Speer – Guy

The Full Monty was Hugo Speer’s debut in a major film role, since then he’s been a recurring face on screen.

The actor has had roles in Deathwatch, Boudica, Late Bloomers and the 2019 film Trick or Treat.

His busy TV career has seen him on a number of big shows including Midsomer Murders, Silent Witness and Vera.

Speer was absent from the premiere and will not appear at all on the new Disney+ series. 

The actor was set to reprise his role as Guy but was fired during filming after Disney+ investigated ‘allegations of inappropriate conduct.’

Speer was dismissed after a runner opened the door of his trailer when he was changing.

The actor claimed he hid himself behind a wardrobe during the brief interaction and was shocked to hear he had received complaints. 

The accusation sent him into a spiral and the actor shared he now needs anti depressants. 

He said: ‘This is The Full Monty you’re on, isn’t it? For God’s sake?’ It was tragi-comic, but they didn’t realise how badly affected I was. I went into massive, deep shock. As you can see, I’m still kind of there.’ 

Lesley Sharp – Jean
