Bruised bananas are not usually particularly appealing. But this bunch of artfully blemished beauties has got under the skin of thousands of admirers worldwide.

One even replicates Mona Lisa, while others depict Adele, David Bowie and John Travolta.

They are all the fruit of the labours of amateur artist Anna Chojnicka, who discovered her ‘banana bruiser’ art form while self-isolating in March last year. Her Instagram gallery has more than 15,000 followers. Bananas oxidise, or turn brown, as enzymes are released and react with the air.

Miss Chojnicka, 36, from London, uses a seam ripper, an instrument used by sewers, to prod the bananas. Each takes 90 minutes. She says: ‘Controlling the bruising process conjures light and shade. I photograph each banana — then eat it.’
