Alabama Democrat Doug Jones shrugged off criticism from President Donald Trump, and said he believes voters are focused on the issues in the hotly contested race for U.S. Senate.

Jones told reporters Sunday that his record speaks for itself and said health care, the economy and education are the top concerns in Alabama.

Trump came to the aid of Jones’ opponent, Republican Roy Moore, by tweeting earlier in the day that it would be a “disaster” to have a Democrat win.

Jones said he would be an independent vote in the Senate.

Two women have accused Moore of assaulting or molesting them when they were teenagers and he was in his 30s. Moore has denied the allegations. At least five others said Moore pursued relationships with them as teens.

The Democratic candidate in the sharply contested Alabama Senate race says his opponent in the race, Republican Roy Moore, is “unfit for office.”

Democrat Doug Jones issued a statement Sunday that made no mention of a tweet earlier in the day by President Donald Trump. In the tweet, Trump criticized Jones as “WEAK” and “a disaster” and claimed Jones would raise taxes “TO THE SKY.”

A statement by Jones’ campaign said Moore was not fit to serve in the U.S. Senate even before sexual misconduct claims surfaced earlier this month.

Two women have accused the 70-year-old Moore of sexually assaulting or molesting them decades ago, when he was in his 30s and they were teenagers. At least five others have said he pursued romantic relationships when they were teenagers. Moore vehemently denies the allegations.

Jones’ campaign says he is focusing on “getting things done for real Alabamians.”

Trump claims Jones is itching to raise taxes “TO THE SKY” and would be “a disaster.”

As the Dec. 12 election nears, two women have accused Moore of sexually assaulting or molesting them decades ago, when he was in his 30s and they were teenagers.

At least five others have said he pursued romantic relationships when they were teenagers and he was a prosecutor. He’s denied the allegations.
