The Logie Awards’ wildest moments revealed ahead of TV’s night of nights

The Logie Awards will celebrate its 62nd anniversary on the Gold Coast this Sunday.

And ahead of the ceremony, Daily Mail Australia looks back on some of the wildest moments in the awards show’s history.

From David Koch accusing Martha Kalifatidis of elbowing him on the red carpet to Tracy Grimshaw’s ‘nudie run’, there’s a reason why the Logies is considered the loosest night in showbusiness.

Perhaps the Logies’ most memorable controversy occurred when Karl Stefanovic hosted the Today show drunk the morning after 2009’s ceremony.

Karl reported from Melbourne’s Crown Casino looking visibly worse for wear, and even confessed on air that he hadn’t had any sleep.

In a 2014 interview, the journalist admitted he was ‘smashed’ and that it would have gone unnoticed if it wasn’t for the popularity of YouTube.

In 2011, Karl caused a stir yet again when he made a lewd comment about his then-wife Cassandra Thorburn (right) while accepting an award on stage

‘This was the first Logies when stuff really started working on the Internet,’ Karl said.

‘I remember seeing it on Today Tonight and going, “Oh God”. I really was drunk… or at least I certainly looked and sounded drunk.’

In 2010, Karl was banned from the bar and made to work as a red carpet correspondent to prevent a repeat performance.

A year later, in 2011, Karl caused a stir yet again when he made a lewd comment about his then-wife Cassandra Thorburn while accepting an award on stage.

He said: ‘My beautiful wife Cass, who lets me go on these weird and wonderful excursions around the world… a great influence in my life. And she’s also got the best a**e I’ve ever seen!’

And almost a decade later, the Channel Nine presenter, 47, confessed that ‘it’s been a long time between drinks’ and that he won’t be holding back if he wins the Gold Logie for the Gold Logie for Most Popular Personality in 2022.

‘I think everyone needs to see me the next day on The Today Show to see how I scrub up after I win. Actually, it will be the same if I don’t!’ he told TV Tonight.

Another memorable moment took place in 2019, when Sunrise host David Koch (left) accused MAFS bride Martha Kalifatidis (right) of ‘elbowing’ him in the ribs and leaving a ‘bruise’ while she supposedly barged across the red carpet

Another memorable moment took place in 2019, when Sunrise host David Koch accused MAFS bride Martha Kalifatidis of ‘elbowing’ him in the ribs and leaving a ‘bruise’ while she supposedly barged across the red carpet.

Kochie and his colleagues Sam Armytage, Natalie Barr and Mark Beretta mocked Martha, 34, saying the incident supposedly happened as she was trying to be photographed.

Martha hit back in a YouTube video later that day, denying the incident and calling the Sunrise team ‘bullies’.

Elsewhere Jessika Power and Ines Basic made headlines when they gatecrashed the ceremony, sending tensions among the invited cast members skyrocketing and Nine’s publicity department into a meltdown.

In 2018, The Bachelor’s Nick ‘The Honey Badger’ Cummins raised eyebrows after having a bit too much to drink.

The rugby player looked rather bleary eyed as he cuddled up to his sisters in the early hours of the morning, having partied the night away with fellow celebrities at The Star Gold Coast.

Looking in giddy spirits, the larrikin sportsman wrapped his arms around his siblings as they laughed for the paparazzi.

Back in 1998, A Current Affair’s Tracy Grimshaw famously locked herself out of her hotel room by accident completely nude.

She previously blamed the embarrassing incident on the tequila shots she’d been drinking with her good friend James Packer.

Her ‘nudie run’ was widely known within the media industry, but didn’t become public knowledge until 2013, when Tracy shared a few small details on The Kyle and Jackie O Show.

She finally told the whole story last year, telling News Corp: ‘I locked myself out of my hotel room starkers. It was 3.45am and there was no-one in the hallway.’

In her drunken state, she’d mistaken the entry door for the bathroom door, thus explaining how she ended up in the hallway without her keys.

In 1999, comedian Andrew Denton famously sat on James Packer’s lap when he was tasked with hosting the ceremony.

Perching on a bewildered James’ knee, Andrew said: ‘I’ll sit on your lap and I’d like you to drink this glass of water if you could while I talk.’

‘Would you mind just drinking that, James?’ he asked, much to the amusement of the giggling audience.

Then, peering down the camera lens, he added: ‘I’d just like to say all the opinions expressed by me tonight are mine and not those of the Packer family.’

In 2004, Sophie Monk made headlines when she passed out on the red carpet and had to be carried out of the event.

In 2018, Sophie revealed the seeds of the incident were sewn when she realised she was ‘too big’ for her dress.

‘It was my own fault,’ she said. ‘I was a little too big for the dress and they couldn’t zip it up. So, they said, “Just go in the sauna and come out every 15 minutes, and do that for a while.” But, they didn’t tell me to drink water.’

Sophie added that the worst thing about her collapse was that is distracted from the winners at that year’s ceremony.

It’s not just Australian celebrities who have caused controversy at the Logies, as many international stars have also made headlines over the years.

In 2006, U.S. comedian Joan Rivers took to the stage with Today’s entertainment reporter Richard Wilkins and appeared to be in very high spirits indeed.

‘We look like Nicole and Tom… only reversed!’ she said after being handed the microphone.

She continued to make further jokes about former Hollywood couple Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise before barking, ‘Grow up, Australia!’, in a bid to liven up the crowd.

When Richard tried to intervene, the Fashion Police star snapped back: ‘Call me Ms Rivers, like you do in the United States’.

She then gestured towards the audience, saying: ‘They don’t know who the s**t I am’.
