‘The Lovely Meghan’: Toronto-based charity reveals nickname staff had for the Duchess of Sussex

A community centre has revealed how staff nicknamed the Duchess of Sussex ‘the lovely Meghan’ when she volunteered for the Toronto-based charity while working on Suits.

Prince Harry, 35, and Meghan Markle, 38, selected St. Felix Centre as one of their 12 charities to feature in December in an effort to highlight those helping the ‘lonely, hungry and homeless’.

The Duchess of Sussex volunteered with the charity while living in Canada and working on the TV series, spending time at the soup kitchen to hand out leftover food from the set.

The charity revealed on Twitter that ‘many people have fond memories’ of the Duchess of Sussex, with some nicknaming her ‘the lovely Meghan’.

Yesterday Meghan and Harry urged their Instagram followers to reflect on the ‘lonely, hungry and homeless’ this Christmas and posted photos from charitable accounts inspired by the ‘Twelve Days of Christmas’.

The heartfelt message to their 9.9million followers led many fans to flock to the highlighted charities, which included the St. Felix Centre.

And after one royal fan tweeted their support online, the charity tweeted: ‘Thank you! Many people here have fond memories of #DuchessMeghan volunteering with us, though we remember her just as “the lovely Meghan”.’

They added: ‘We’re happy to see she continues supporting vulnerable people now as a member of the Royal Family We’d love for her to visit us again one day.’

The charity’s website describes how they offer programmes and services for marginalised members of the community.

A Good Morning America segment, which aired in May last year, detailed how the royal heard about the centre from a friend before she started volunteering for the soup kitchen.

The royal donated food from the set of Suits, with the Executive Director Brian Harris revealing: ‘That Thanksgiving she would bring in all the food…all the turkeys and the fixings for over 100 people.’

The royal reportedly also brought cast and crew members from the TV series to the centre.

Harry and Meghan’s Instagram post, which contained pictures of charity workers from projects they have been inspired by, called on fans to think of others at this time of year.

‘With festive holiday season upon us, it’s also a reminder to reflect on those in need – those who may feel lonely, hungry, homeless, or may be experiencing the holidays for the first time without loved ones,’ they said.

‘It’s an important time of year to help those around you who may be less fortunate, or who would appreciate even the smallest act of kindness.

‘Continuing our monthly tradition of highlighting accounts that do good, and inspired by the “twelve days of Christmas” – we have selected twelve organisations caring for those in need – especially at this time of year.

‘There are, thankfully, so many organisations around the world doing good on global and grassroots levels, many of which are not on Instagram.

‘Check out the accounts we have chosen and please share those in your own communities that are making a difference.

‘We would love to hear about the ones that inspire you – so please tell us and add your country’s flag!’
