The luxury $7,500-a-night Capella resort where Trump and Kim will meet in Singapore

The historic summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un will be held on a sprawling luxury resort on a small island in Singapore with a dark history.

The pair have exchanged numerous barbs over Twitter and state-owned TV, but will finally meet face-to-face across the negotiating table on June 12 at the Capella Hotel on Sentosa Island.

Surrounded by rainforest with peacocks for company they and dozens of advisers will begin to hammer out a deal to have the rogue state shut down its nuclear weapons program for good.

The 30-acre resort has 112 rooms, all furnished with king beds, starting at $500 a night up to a three-bedroom colonial manor with a private pool for $7,500 a night.

Originally built to house the British officers of the Royal Artillery and their families in the 1880s, it was restored as a five-star hotel in 2009 by UK architect Norman Foster.

Facilities include a sunny portico and the circular Grand Ballroom with a glass-domed skylight and room for 400 guests, popular for wedding receptions that can cost up to $1,800 a table.

The resort is also a magnet for culture with about 900 works of art by 200 artists from 15 countries, French sculptor Bernar Venet’s The Arc on the front lawn, and a Nikolas Weinstein chandelier in the ballroom.

Restaurants come with a hefty price tag as one might expect with $66 bird’s nest soup or Australian abalone, and $58.50 beef cheek or Peking duck from its two restaurants.

Even higher-end is its Chef’s Table experience with a personal chef serving up breakfast for $1,125, lunch for $1,875, and dinner for $2,600 per table.

Bottles of Champagne at the cocktail bar after dinner start at $150, Australian craft beer for $16.50 a glass, and a $21.75 signature cocktail.

President Trump will even be able to get a break from talks at the world-class golf course just a short stroll from the hotel’s conference facilities.

Singapore’s government declared the entire island, which also holds other resorts, upmarket apartments, Michelin star restaurants, and a marina, a ‘special events area’ from June 10 to 14.

That means security will be able to control access to the island and the hotel, which is booked out during that time, and provide total security for the two leaders.

But the island wasn’t always a tranquil playground for the rich – it used to be a haven for pirates in the 1800s known as Pulau Blakang Mati ‘Island of Death from Behind’.

Then in World War II it was the site of a massacre of fighting-aged Chinese men by Japanese soldiers trying to weed out troublemakers.

They were marched to the beach Capella Hotel overlooks and sprayed with machine gun bullets before their bodies were thrown into the sea. The island also had a prisoner of war camp with 400 Allied soldiers.

President Trump and Mr Kim won’t stay at Capella, having their own rooms at the Shangri-La Hotel and St Regis Singapore respectively.

However, many of their staff will stay at the resort with high-ranking advisers touring the facility and others already hunkered down in their rooms preparing for the summit.

They include White House deputy chief of staff for operations Joe Hagin who is already on site, visited by Mr Kim’s de facto chief of staff Kim Chang Son who was spotted at the hotel on May 31.

Madonna and Lady Gaga have also stayed at Capella when visiting the island for concerts or getaways and ex-NBA star Dennis Rodman will attend the summit as a guest of his friend Mr Kim.
