The Matildas’ World Cup success is causing relationship problems after several boyfriends of female fans have said women’s soccer will never be regarded the same as men’s.

One diehard female Matildas fan set off a social media firestorm this week when she posted on a Facebook she was upset her boyfriend did not support the female Australian soccer team – and was promptly urged to dump him.

‘I’ve found a substantial ick in my partner. I’ve been loving watching the Tillies this World Cup. But he makes comments like, “Women’s sport doesn’t make money or get sponsors”,’ she wrote.

‘He said it will never be regarded the same as men’s sport. Girls are obviously smashing it in sport and his masculinity is so fragile he’s incapable of acknowledging it,’ she added.

Fellow social media users quickly commented that this behaviour was a huge red flag and begged her to call time on the relationship.

‘Ick? More like misogyny, don’t put up with that for your or feminism’s sake,’ one person wrote, while another added: ‘Ew, give him the flick.’

‘More and more women are leaving men over stuff like this and I’m all for that,’ a third person chipped in.

Meanwhile another female fan said she had absolutely had it with her husband after he made ‘sexist comments about women’s soccer’.

‘Never thought he’d been this much of an a**hole. I’m pretty hurt, normally I put him in his place,’ she wrote.

It comes as the Matildas secured their place in the FIFA Women’s World Cup semi-finals for the first time in football history.

The team beat France (0-0) 7-6 on penalties in the longest shootout in the history of the tournament on Saturday night.

The nerve-racking shootout saw three saves from Mackenzie Arnold before Cortnee Vine kicked the winner to seal the quarter-final victory in front of 49,461 screaming fans wearing green and gold at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium.

Those ecstatic fans were joined by the millions who were glued to screens at pubs, clubs, parks and festivals amongst other public venues across the country.

The spectacle was truly a moment that will live on in Australian sporting history forever.
