The most popular baby names of 2017 have been revealed

The most popular baby names of 2017 in the US have been revealed, with old favorite Olivia and relevant newcomer Atticus coming out on top.

According to baby name website Nameberry.com, this year saw boys’ names make dramatic shifts up and down the popularity ladder, with more new entries in the count of the Top 1,000 baby names.

And although girls’ names usually go in and out of favor at a rapid pace, Olivia has remained at the top two years in a row, having been named the most popular girl baby name of 2016 also.

Newcomer: Casey Affleck named his eldest son Atticus in 2007, the name was made famous in Harper Lee's novel To Kill a Mockingbird

Celebrity influence: Olivia Palermo’s first name topped the girls poll for a second year in a row, while Atticus, the name of Casey Affleck’s youngest son, was the most popular name for boys

Last year, Ezra was the most popular name for boys.

This is evidence of a sea change in how parents choose names for their sons, says Nameberry’s co-founder Pamela Redmond Satran.

She believes parents are moving away from family names and traditional male choices and  are now starting to judge boys names in the same way they do girls, with style the driving factor.

Nameberry’s popular names list measures which names attract the largest share of the site’s nearly 250 million page views, versus how many babies actually receive that name.

It’s a gauge of interest in baby names , according to Satran, and a predictor of which names will become more popular in the future.
