Smartphones are slowly becoming the sort of sensible gift you unwrap and then say in a broken voice: ‘Oh, great.’ Thankfully, a few can still stir up yuletide excitement – partially because the price tags are so hefty they prove your relatives must really love you.

Priciest of all is Apple’s iPhone X. It has the best screen of any phone on the market, hands down – and looks absolutely gorgeous, to boot. But the camera’s not quite as good as you’d hope for £1,000, and the dual-glass body feels worryingly fragile, as if you’re holding a precious Ming vase.

Google’s £750 Pixel 2 XL is better in the camera department, helping even photographic numbskulls like me turn out excellent shots.

It’s easier to use than most Androids, and the virtual assistant is like Siri’s cleverer cousin. Huawei offers another option for those who dare to pronounce the Chinese brand’s name (it’s wah-weh).

Its new Mate 10 Pro is great value at £700, with specs that match more expensive flagship phones, and it offers a fancy AI-assisted camera and mesmerisingly gorgeous six-inch screen.

One word of warning: none of these mobiles has a headphone socket, so be sure you have some Bluetooth cans handy.
