The Liberal Party has been avoiding public inquiry into the reasoning that led to the sudden and vicious coup against ex-Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

With the majority of the party decisively choosing to avoid media outlets, in which they would be subject to public scrutiny, Minister for Social Services Dan Tehan appeared on the ABC’s 7:30 on Friday.

Still, he refused to provide an answer to the one question on everybody’s lips.

‘Can you explain to the hundreds of thousands of Australian voters, watching this program tonight, why your party had to dump Malcolm Turnbull?’ host Leigh Sales asked.

Mr Tehan answered with a tactfully rehearsed response.

‘Well, in the end our party room has decided that they want a new generation of leaders. They have elected Scott Morrison to be our new Prime Minister and Josh Frydenberg to be our new deputy leader.’

He then went on to say the coalition hoped to ‘make sure that between now and the election that is all we are seeking to do is to govern for them, to hear what their concerns are, what their needs are and make sure that our focus remains on them.’ 

When pressed, he denied any underlying motive or suggestion that Mr Turnbull did not do such things, before returning to his safeguarded ‘new generation of leaders’ response.

Despite the divisive result, with 45 votes going to new Prime Minister Scott Morrison and 40 to his contender Peter Dutton, Mr Tehan assured the media outlet his party was united behind their new leader.
