A decluttering expert has revealed the hidden washing machine compartment everyone forgets to clean – and shared her trick for leaving it spotless in no time. 

Anita Birges, from Sydney, says most people assume mould builds up on the rubber seal of a washing machine when in fact the dispenser drawer is where it thrives.

To thoroughly clean the compartment and remove mould Anita first slides the dispenser drawer out of the compartment.

To remove mould Anita removes the drawer and soaks it in boiling water and vinegar for an hour

While the dispenser soaks Anita gets herself a dish brush and adds a squeeze of toothpaste and a dash of water into the clear plastic area

She soaks the drawer in a an equal mixture of boiling water and white vinegar for at least one hour.

After just 10 minutes of soaking the grime and gunk from the drawer should float to the surface of the water.

While the dispenser soaks Anita gets herself a dish brush and adds a squeeze of toothpaste and a dash of water into the clear plastic area.

She then shakes the brush and scrubs the inside and outside area of the compartment thoroughly

Anita suggests to use a toothbrush with toothpaste on it to get into smaller crevices

 She also says to scrub the dispenser drawer in the boiling water with the brush full of the toothpaste mixture

She then shakes the dish brush up until bubbles form and begins scrubbing the inside and outside area of the compartment thoroughly.

To finish she rinses the entire compartment with boiling water and wipes the area down with a microfibre cloth to reveal a spotless and mould-free space.
