The Queen is called ‘Sharon’ by protection officers, royal aide claims

The Queen’s code name revealed: Monarch is referred to as ‘Sharon’ by bodyguards when she is on public engagements, royal aide claims

  • When on public engagements the Queen, 93, is ‘regularly called ‘Sharon’ or ‘S’ ‘
  • Royal historian Hugo Vickers suggests this might ‘simply stand for Sovereign’
  • Prince Harry and Meghan Markle ‘are called David Stevens and Davina Scott’

The Queen’s unusual code name has been revealed, according to a royal source.

While the monarch is known as the Queen or Her Majesty to members of the public, an insider has claimed that aides and bodyguards call her ‘Sharon’, in a bid to protect her identity.

When on public engagements the royal, 93, is reportedly given the alternative moniker, or often called just ‘S’ by royal staff, in a nod to her being the Sovereign.

‘She’s written down as S. It’s Sharon,’ an aide told The Sun this week.

When asked whether this was likely, royal historian Hugo Vickers told the publication: ‘It is highly likely. The purpose of any sobriquet is that it should be anonymous and memorable.

‘If it can also be a bit mischievous and therefore all the more memorable, then that makes sense. Although S might simply stand for Sovereign of course.’

And while the Queen may be known by a secret code names to bodyguards, when in private, her loved ones refer to her by their own nicknames.

Prince Philip refers to his wife as ‘Lilibet’, playing on her name Elizabeth, and is also believed to call her ‘sausage’ when they are alone.

Meanwhile the Queen is known as ‘Gary’ courtesy of Prince William who, as a youngster, struggled to pronounce ‘granny’ and would call her the name instead.

Elsewhere, her great grandchildren Prince George and Princess Charlotte refer to Her Majesty as ‘Gan-Gan’.

The latest claims follow reports that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were called ‘David Stevens’ and ‘Davina Scott’ by their protection officers.

The secret code names were said to use the initials ‘DS’ from their official title, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, to prevent their contact details from falling into the wrong hands.

Meanwhile Prince William and Kate Middleton are reportedly called ‘Danny Collins’ and ‘Daphne Clark’ in their aides’ contact lists.

The initials ‘DC’ in the secret code names allude, of course, to the royal couple’s title – the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, reports the Daily Star.

‘If anyone got hold of a phone belonging to a royal aide or security team member, they won’t find Harry Windsor and Meghan’s names in it,’ said a royal source, adding, ‘it is far too risky in the wrong hands. They get given code names but they are changed regularly for obvious reasons.’

The publication reported how an insider told them that a worker at a royal event was handed a phone with a ‘random name’ on the screen by one of Harry’s aides.

Failing to recognise the name on the assistant’s mobile, the confused worker asked why the person on the line wanted to speak with him.

The source added: ‘Imagine the surprise he got when he heard Harry’s voice on the other end of the line.’
