The seven things that will make your outfit look more expensive

Not everyone has the salary to spend money on Gucci slides and a designer Louis Vuitton phone case.

So if you want to look expensive – but only spend a fraction on your accessories – you’re going to need to do some clever colour coordinating.

Accentuating your waist, keeping your handbags in shape and making sure your whites are a crisp shade of white is also important, according to Harper’s Bazaar.

1. Purchase a top handle bag

It’s the tiny book-size bag adopted by many a Duchess and celebrity IT Girl.

Instead of slinging a large, crumpled shoulder bag over your shoulder – which has the tendency to look a little disheveled – this much smaller variety oozes Gossip Girl trust fund socialite.

You can either make it a statement print or alternatively opt for a conservative black or tan leather for work chic.

2. Send out a statement with block colours

Wearing one bright shade from top to bottom might seem eccentric to begin with, but you’ll soon realise it’s the way of the rich and famous.

With a pair of gold sunglasses perched on the end of your nose, you can opt for a lemon power suit, fuchsia gown or grassy green skirt and top with ease.

The same look can be achieved with a monochromatic back and white number with careful tailoring.

3.  Make sure your beauty routine doesn’t fall by the wayside

If your outfit is looking a million dollars but your hair is something to be desired, you’ll find your look losing value fast.

It’s not something you need to spend hours preparing, but a quick slick of bright lipstick and taming flyaways with a low chignon can go far in smartening up your appearance.

Alternatively try a creative braid for that extra pizzazz.

4. Keep your whites crisp

Think a sunburnt holiday in Greece and your favourite linen slip dress on a yacht – it’s every bit the millionaire’s dream escape.

But if your white gown isn’t completely white you’re going to have a hard time looking the best dressed.

Either bleach the outfit to return it to its original hue, or toss those pre-loved items.

5.  Accentuate the waist

Draw attention to your midsection so all of your clothes look like they were made for your proportions.

Whether it is a jacket or a pair of overalls – a belt or cinched fabric will go far in the pursuit of looking expensive.

It’ll also show people around you that you take pride in your body and appearance.

6. Keep your handbags in their original shape

We usually spend a tidy sum on accessories like handbags and shoes because they don’t ever go out of ‘fashion’.

But it’s important to keep it in good condition to avoid looking cheap.

‘To clean your bag use Windex on patent leather and unscented body lotion on all other leather,’ the publication recommends.

‘Always use your dust bag when travelling or storing and, for softer handbag shapes, be sure to stuff them to ensure the bag keeps its shape.’

7. Match your bags with shoes

If you’re wearing black cowboy boots make sure you’re pairing them with a black handbag.

‘This is a tried and tested rule that isn’t necessarily restrictive, but is intended to be a good fall-back if you’re not sure which accessories to use when finishing an outfit off,’ Harper’s Bazaar explained.

Not everyone is so fond of this rule – and tend to mix up their accessory colour scheme – but it’s a safe option.
