The simple decluttering trick everyone should do on NYE

With New Year’s celebrations just hours away, many homeowners are rushing to overhaul their homes and declutter for a refreshing start to 2018.

And while many simply clean out Christmas leftovers or pop some washing on, one Australian decluttering expert has shared a very simple ‘hack’ that is guaranteed to help people stay organised in 2018.

Anita Birges, the founder of Mise en Place, has dubbed the clever technique the ‘Reverse Hanger Hack’.

Simply put, the technique involves turning all clothing hangers the same way at the start of the year and as pieces are worn, the hangers are turned the other direction.

As a result, it is clear to see what pieces are rarely worn and therefore the best ones to sell, donate to charity or throw out.

Taking to her Facebook page in a live stream, Ms Birges took her followers through the process and explained why the simple five minute trick was so helpful.

‘I’m going to teach you something called the reverse hanger hack.  This is the last thing you need to do on the 30th of December every year,’ she explained.

‘I have washed my dishes and done my laundry so the new year starts calm, decluttered, organised and fresh.’

‘You are going to take your clothes and get your hangers and reverse them so the open end of your hanger is now facing outwards. Turn them from the inside out.

‘Every time you wear a piece of clothing now – say I want to wear this red top – I am going to take it off and wear it and when I put it back I put it with the open end back to normal.’

'In six months - set your clock a timer today for the 30th of June, 2018 - come back and look at what clothes have been reversed,' Ms Birges said

Ms Birges urges everyone to follow the technique and see how much of a difference it makes to their organisation in six months.

‘In six months I am going to know exactly what I’ve worn. Everything that hasn’t been turned around will be donated or sold,’ she said.

‘That is my tip to end your year. You are going to have a wonderful 2018 and in six months we will come back, give away the things we don’t use and keep our lives organised and decluttered.’
