The simple five-step process that will help YOU up your salary by 80 per cent

Asking for a pay rise can be one of the toughest conversations you’re likely to face in your working life.

While it might feel as though it’s easier to avoid the subject altogether, it’s also possible, armed with the right strategies, that you can ask for and receive an increase.

Shivani Gopal, founder of The Remarkable Woman – a foundation which has helped members increase their salaries by up to 80 per cent – believes it’s entirely possible to up your pay – but there are some things you need to do to in order to give yourself the best chance.

Here FEMAIL takes a look at Ms Gopal’s top tips for increasing your income by asking for a pay rise that reflects your worth.

1. Work out your value

The first thing you need to do is decide what you want to be paid and plan for it.

Once you have done this, bring this back into concrete terms by working out your marketability – or what your skills and abilities are worth.

‘Reinvest your CV, and shop it around to different companies so that you know your marketability and you know your worth,’ Ms Gopal told Popsugar.

This way you can get a sense of what the market will bear, and use this figure as a starting point to build your case.

2. Don’t do it alone

One of the most effective strategies for advancing your position in the workplace is to use a mentor who can help support your goals, said the 31-year-old entrepreneur.

Speaking to Daily Mail Australia, Ms Gopal said a mentor is a great resource for developing skills and for keeping yourself on track.

‘Be realistic, work with a mentor who can help you to knock your goals out of the park and blow your own trumpet,’ she explained.

Ms Gopal said the key to making this situation work was to make sure you are as honest with the person who is mentoring you as you can possibly be.

3. Go the extra mile

Don’t be content to rest on your laurels once you have mastered all you need to do in order to do your job, said Ms Gopal.

She suggests investing in courses that can help improve your skillset – those directly related to your job, as well as those that are indirectly related.

‘That will have a huge impact on the way in which you’re able to present yourself, because remember, if you’re asking for a pay raise, you’ve got to show that not only can you do your job really well, but you’ve got so much more to you,’ she told Popsugar.

4. Allow yourself to become positively visible

Ms Gopal said it’s important to allow yourself to be seen in a positive way by those you work with and by others in your industry.

Her advice: ‘Get noticed internally and externally.’

She suggested that as well as highlighting your own achievements when networking also take an active role on social media regarding company causes.

5. Finally, ask for what you want

Asking for a pay rise means being very clear on a number of factors – and not just how much extra money you would like to earn, said Ms Gopal.

She recommended when you are meeting with a manager to have this discussion to break this process down into four steps: name it, monetise it, time it, and equate it.

Ms Gopal said it’s important to have worked out exactly what you want first so you can get to the point quickly.

Next, outline the monetary value of your work, and think about how much money you’ve made the company.’

Timing it doesn’t just refer to when you actually ask, Ms Gopal explained, rather it’s more measuring the work you in terms of actual hours.

And lastly, equate it. This step is where you bring together everything you’ve spoken about in order to present your case in the best possible light.

With 16 to 18 per cent of women earning less than men, navigating the tricky question of getting a pay rise can be something plenty of women avoid.

Speaking to FEMAIL previously, she said: ‘Keep pushing, and keep asking. You are a strong communicator with a brilliant mind. Don’t hold yourself back.’
