Flying internationally is a stressful endevour for most people so the possibility of having as much space as a business class passenger by getting a spare seat or row in economy is a bonus.

Travel experts at finder.com.au have studied the figures and come up with the best ways to get that extra space during a long haul flight escape.com.au reported.

The team at finder.com.au crunched the numbers for 900,000 international flights over the course of five years to come up with their detailed findings.

The best time of year to fly if you want to avoid those jam packed planes is May.

Flights departing Australia for international destinations were on average on 74.2% full while flights coming into Australia during the same time period just 69.7% full. 

Finder.com.au editor-in-chief and travel expert, Angus Kidman said the benefits of having an empty seat next to you can’t be understated.

‘Though there are tricks and apps you can use to get a better seat, having less people on a flight is what really makes a difference,’ he said. 

‘There’s nothing like a row to yourself to try and catch some sleep. 

‘Even a spare seat between you and the next person offers a lot more comfort.’

Some of the other results found by the analyst team include July being the best time to fly to Japan with flights likely to only be 60% full while flying to the United States with american Airlines in May would likely have you on flights only 65% full.
