The Skin Shark treats inflammation using an ingredient inspired by shark bile

Just when you thought you’d heard it all, the beauty world has delivered yet another weird and wonderful trend – and it’s ‘400million years in the making’.

Enter The Skin Shark – a new skincare range that treats inflammation using an ingredient inspired by shark bile.

According to the Australian brand, sharks’ immune systems have evolved to become ‘free radical fighting machines over the past 400million years’ and as a result their bile salts are ‘one the most potent free radical fighters in the living world’.

With this in mind, they created a breakthrough man-made ingredient for acne-prone skin – 5Beta-Scymnol – which mimics shark bile salts to reduce the free radicals and oils that contribute to redness and breakouts.

The idea for the ingredient stems from scientists looking into traditional Chinese medicine a few decades back.

They found the marine salt-complex found in shark bile had been effective on skin conditions for years and dubbed it a ‘supercharged antioxidant’.

Wanting a more ethical and sustainable solution, the Skin Shark team used biochemistry to recreate the ingredient synthetically – a world first.

The $45 Clearing Serum also contains totarol, known for antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and bakuchiol, a plant-based retinol alternative with anti-ageing and anti-acne benefits.

The $25 Spot Treatment also contains contacticel which is known to attack pollution on skin, reduce squalene oxidation and deliver anti-inflammatory effects.

The brand has found that after six to eight weeks, those suffering acne usually notice a significant improvement.

Acne and diet: which foods are best and worst?

WORST FOODS

Refined Carbohydrates

People with acne, spots, blemishes, call them what you will, tend to consume more refined carbs than people without acne. These include pasta made with white flour, white potatoes, white rice, sugary drinks and honey

Skim Milk

Cow’s milk contains the proteins whey and casein. When we digest these, they release a hormone similar to insulin, called IGF-1. This is known to trigger outbreaks

Whey Proteins

It could be that the amino acids in whey protein can cause the body to produce more insulin, and as we mentioned earlier, insulin is no friend of acne

Foods high in Omega-6 Fats

Omega-6 fats are found in the likes of corn and soy oil, typically part of the modern Western diet. These oils are linked to increased levels of inflammation and acne

BEST FOODS

Low GI foods

An apple a day, as they say. Or some beans, carrots, oatmeal. All are great low GI foods that are delicious and plentiful

Salmon

Actually, anything containing omega-3 fatty acids. They are anti-inflammatory and linked with lowering the risk of acne

Oysters

While not everyone’s cup of tea, if you love them, you’ll love that they contain zinc which is great for the skin and at killing off bacteria that causes acne. Another plus is that zinc is also an anti-inflammatory

Green Tea

Talking about cups of tea, this is the pick of the bunch. The polyphenols found in green tea reduce inflammation and lower sebum (oil found in the skin) production

Nuts

Almonds, peanuts, Brazil nuts all contain antioxidants like vitamin E and selenium, associated with fighting acne. Plus they’re tasty. Hey, needless to say, if you have a nut allergy, stay away from nuts, no matter how bad your acne is

Turmeric

Apparently it’s also great for acne sufferers as it can help regulate blood sugar, improve your insulin sensitivity and inhibit the growth of bacteria that can cause acne

Clinically, a study of 27 people (21 females, six males) between the ages of 15 and 39, using the serum and spot treatment daily over a six week period, saw 70 per cent reporting clearer skin by the end of the regimen.

Additionally, a study by RMIT University found that ‘the compounds found in the shark bile come from the gall bladders of sharks, where they lower the surface tension of the intestinal fluid in the shark digestive system’.

‘The active ingredient of shark bile is able to control the problem of hyperseborrhea –  excessively oily skin in men and women of all ages – and helps restore the balance to oily and combination skins,’ Associate Professor Theo Macrides said.

‘Its main use would be as a natural alternative to acne cream.’

‘I’ve been looking for a product for a few years without much luck. I’ve been using the Clearing Serum and Spot Treatment for 6 weeks now and I’m completely blown away. My stubborn pimples have cleared up and my dry skin feels great,’ one customer wrote.

‘I have been using this for two months now and have seen an incredible difference in my skin’s texture and glow! My skin looks and feels so much healthier and the amount of breakouts I have now compared to before using these two products has reduced immensely,’ another added.

‘I really is something else.’
