For several years now, we have been listening to several keynote seminars at the CES regarding how our kitchen devices are going to be smart enough to talk to each other. In 2019, it seems that this is the year when companies have finally able to make that possible. At the CES 2019, we have come across a lot of kitchen appliances and gadgets which are now smarter than ever before. Companies like LG, Samsung, Whirlpool and various other, have come up with their own set of smart kitchen appliances which are going to transform your entire kitchen if you use them.
During the CES, we saw that LG flexed a smart refrigerator which can easily display different kinds of recipes on the screen placed on the door, can turn on your oven automatically once you start cooking and also preheat the oven at the optimal temperature. Similarly, various other vendors displayed such smart devices this year like the Automatic Rotimatic Rotimaker. This device can make rotis and parathas, automatically at the push of a button. But, there’s one thing that we believe is a serious problem. If your smart kitchen is not modular, then you are at the risk of becoming redundant very soon.
Hey Bixby, please call the installer!
Samsung is always one of the top brands to whom developers look up to at the CES every year. This year also, the brand was showing their wide range of smart kitchen technology and promised the customers that all their tech can now be controlled from their advanced Family Hub fridge. They also demonstrated how your kitchen appliances can be controlled from their Gear watch series very easily. Absolutely brilliant, isn’t it? Samsung also paid a lot of focus on their voice assistant – Bixby. You can extensively use this assistant for a lot of tasks, for instance – if you want to know whether you have milk in your fridge or not, just ask Bixby.
But, the problem is technology and innovations become redundant at a much faster rate when compared to devices they are integrated into. For example, the software in your phone might become outdated after 2-3 years, but you will still be able to use the gadget as it is. It is manageable. However, if your kitchen oven becomes redundant after a 3 – 4 years, then that is a very serious problem. Why? This is because it not only requires a very serious investment from your end, but you will also need a specialist who can install the device correctly.
In the kitchen, everything you see is of great importance and they are being used on a daily basis. That is why if your fridge or oven stops working from tomorrow, you will need to replace it with quite a bit of finance from your bank.
A really modern, modular solution
The problem we discussed above, is very serious and can burn your pocket in no time. But, there is one solution to this, which we believe will work for most cases. It is to make all these appliances modular. Take for example, if the door of the refrigerator come with the technology, with the rest of being a standard gadget, it is only the door that needs to be replaced. Not the whole appliance. This will help you save on both the costs and the inconvenience caused to the users. Manufacturers must be taking this serious problem into account and luckily at the CES 2019 we were delighted to see a lot of them have started working on it as well. Believe us or not, redundancy is a very big issue these days and that is why manufacturers are giving this problem a serious thought on how it can be tackles in the larger scale. A very interesting example of technology becoming redundant, is that few years ago the McLaren F1 team and developers were surprised to find out that their £12 million F1 racing cars could only be maintained and worked on using the Compaq LTE 5280 laptop released in 1996. Why? Because any other compute always has some kind of compatibility issue with the process. Hence, the computer couldn’t be upgraded. So, you can see how much of a problem it can be.
Final Words – The CES 2019 was very interesting and we got to know about a lot of new facts about the food tech and kitchen industry. Manufacturers are giving a serious thought to the problem of redundancy and we believe they will come up with some kind of solution to this problem.
