A humble pair of sneakers that may have cost you less than $200 when you first bought them could now be worth thousands of dollars, research has revealed. 

According to data from Farfetch, certain makes of leading brands like Nike have increased by as much as 4,000 per cent since they were first released, with one pair now worth nearly $23,000.

Leading the way in terms of price increase were the 2007 Nike SB What The Dunk sneakers, which have increased in value from $163 to $6,812.

Research by fashion platform Farfetch found the shoes – which feature a patchwork design of styles from previous SB versions – appreciated by 4,067 per cent.

Second in the rankings was a pair of high-tech Nike HTM Milano shoes – which was released exclusively in Milan and London in 2012 and has seen its value rise by 3800 per cent to $7,970. 

Of the sneakers with the greatest price appreciation, Nike trainers took out eight of the top ten spots.

Researchers also investigated the sneakers now most highly valued in the world, with a pair of Louis Vuitton Kanye West x Louis Vuitton high-tops coming out on top.

The high-tops came in three different colour schemes, but sneaker fans have clamoured most over the pink and grey version.

Sneaker expert and author Mathieu Le Maux told FEMAIL those looking to buy shoes with and then sell them at a profit later should pay attention to certain factors.

‘It’s difficult to know for certain whether a sneaker will appreciate in value. However, there are a few signals that would allow you to ‘bet’ on it,’ he said.

‘If it’s a limited edition of an iconic model that is revisited by a famous designer or an world-famous artist, it is very likely that its value will increase.’

The sneaker resale market is now worth more than $6 billion globally, according to the new research.
