The SPA DOCTOR goes back to nature: How the wilderness can help unleash your inner warrior

The SPA DOCTOR goes back to nature: How the wilderness can help unleash your inner warrior

THE PROBLEM

I’m a 50-year-old woman who hates gyms. I’m far happier outdoors – hiking, swimming and skiing – but hitting my half-century made me realise this may not be enough to keep me fit, flexible and strong for ever. So I jumped at the chance of a total health overhaul offered by a back to nature fitness holiday.

THE SOLUTION

The Wildfitness retreat on Minorca. It’s a luxurious converted farmhouse perched above the Mediterranean, where the coaches provide six days of bespoke fitness and wellness sessions for small groups. Included are 24 exercise classes, all drawing on the natural environment.

THE TREATMENT

It ranges from combat sessions to tree-climbing, reflex training, games of Frisbee, high-intensity uphill sprint sessions – and a 13-mile cliff and forest hike.

In the evenings, dinner was preceded by a restorative stretch and breathing session. All ages and abilities are welcome – one previous Wildfitness client was in his 80s – and the coaches constantly advise, assess and encourage.

There’s ongoing support for those who go through the programme and, as Wildfitness is a bonding experience, it’s hardly surprising my group are all still supporting each other regularly online. I came home feeling like a warrior, and 48 hours later I did my first-ever parachute jump, buoyed by the kind of confidence in my body that I hadn’t felt for years.

And I’ve kept it up, transferring the Wildfitness ethos into my everyday life by running, jumping, hanging, balancing and climbing. My trainers are filthy.
