The Split viewers are left ‘weeping’ at ‘perfect’ finale

The Split fans were left weeping last night as the final episode left fan favourites Hannah and Nathan both without a happy ending.

The third series of the much-loved BBC One divorce drama started with Hannah (Nicola Walker) and Nathan (Stephen Mangan) entering the final stages of negotiating their divorce.

Many hoped the ex-couple would rekindle their romance in final scenes, while others rooted for Hannah’s romance with fellow lawyer Christie – who had relocated to New York.

However,  viewers instead saw Hannah end up single, with the ending focusing on the importance of moving on and letting go.

‘Just a stunning series and such a fitting ending. I wept bucket loads,’ said one.

‘Absolutely loved the split, although I wanted Hannah’s man to fly across the Atlantic for the perfect happy ending,’ added another.

‘Apart from not wanting it to end #TheSplit I so wanted Hannah & Nathan to get back together,’ wrote a third.

Fans praised the ending as ‘perfect’ praising the writing and Walker’s stellar acting.

‘I never thought I would say this but just the perfect ending, Hannah really knew she needed a new beginning while ending chapters of her life,’ wrote one.

‘The Split was amazing. I’ve never felt so invested in every single character in a drama before, but this was something different. Perfect ending for a perfect series,’ added another.

Other couples in the series also saw foggy ends.

At the start of the season, Hannah’s younger sister Rose and her husband James were at loggerheads over whether to adopt after learning they will not be able to have their own biological children.

It culminated in a row on the street and ended when James cycled away on his bicycle.

After some time cooling off, Rose phoned James and left him a voicemail saying she was ‘all in’ and said he would make an amazing father.

Just moments after he died after being hit by a car.

Rose’s ending was left open ended,  while still grieving her husband she seemed more at peace, and there was even hints of romance between her and the vicar.

Elsewhere, Hannah’s other sister was making strides. She joined Alcoholics Anonymous and her boss Zander confirmed her career would continue to thrive.

Viewers were quick to praise the ending, with one writing: ‘Nicola Walker is an actress who gives you one hundred different emotions in one facial expression and she blows my mind’

Another added:  ‘I think it’s unfair how emotionally attached I am to Nicola Walker. She makes you think and feel so much, she makes you understand not only her character but also yourself. She is just sublime. I will miss #TheSplit’

A third wrote: ‘ That final scene – so beautifully written. I cried. I have said it before but Nicola Walker is one of the most underrated and unrecognised actresses on British TV. She is outstanding and deserves so much more recognition for the work she does! #TheSplit

A fourth commented: ‘I’ve never known an actor who can express their inner emotions & the turmoil they’re going through as exceptionally as Nicola. Her facial expressions & body language can show a world of emotions! She deserves every award going for playing this part!’

‘I refuse to accept that this is the end.I can’t get enough of it and love every minute .Petition to bring it back … please,’ commented another.
