The Super Mario Bros. Movie is on track to cross the $1 billion mark at the box office.
The Chris Pratt-starring animated feature was previously estimated to have earned an impressive $87 million in its second weekend of release, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
However, the movie, which recently became the biggest film of 2023, was later reported to have taken in a whopping $92.5 million from domestic moviegoers by Comscore, effectively awarding it the seventh-largest second weekend in history.
Comscore’s box office analyst, Paul Dergarabedian, issued a statement to comment on The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s command of worldwide audiences.
‘The film is dominating the movie marketplace, redefining the box office potential for a video game movie adaptation and setting the stage for a perfect summer movie season,’ he said.

‘As Mario continues his amazing cinematic journey, audiences clearly want to go along for the ride,’ he said.
If The Super Mario Bros. Movie successfully reaches the $1 billion mark, it will become the third pandemic-era movie to do so, following Spider-Man: No Way Home and Top Gun: Maverick.
Other animated features that have earned over $1 billion from audiences include Frozen, Minions and Incredibles 2.
Development on The Super Mario Bros. Movie was initially revealed to the public in the mid-2010s.
A live-action movie also based on the Nintendo video game franchise was released in 1993 and was met with critical and commercial failure, although it has received a cult following in recent years.
The Pratt-led cast of the feature also includes the talents of performers such as Charlie Day, Anya Taylor-Joy and Seth Rogen, as well as Jack Black, who voices Bowser.
Although The Super Mario Bros. Movie was initially scheduled to be released in December of last year, it ultimately made its debut on April 5.

The feature was met with a mixed reception from critics and currently holds a 58% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
However, the movie was a hit with fans and grossed over $100 million from domestic audiences during its opening weekend, according to Box Office Mojo.
Although rumors of a sequel swirled prior to the movie’s premiere, producer Chris Meledandri stated that the feature’s team wanted to focus on the quality of the project as opposed to plan for its future.
However, several cast members, including Day and Rogen, have expressed interest in producing spinoffs centered on their respective characters Luigi and Donkey Kong.
