The ultimate in Winston Churchill memorabilia: Rent war leader’s first bachelor pad

The stylish flat in which Winston Churchill lived before he was Prime Minister has gone on the market for £74,000 a year.

Located in Mayfair, central London, 105 Mount Street was the wartime leader’s first bachelor pad and sits above a cigar shop.

Churchill rented the apartment in his 20s when it was owned by his cousin, Charles Spencer-Churchill, the 9th Duke of Marlborough. 

Since the days when Churchill occupied the flat at the beginning of the 20th century, the apartment has been fitted with plush furnishings and modern kitchen appliances with an emphasis on a clean aesthetic throughout the home

This living area, complete with a dining table tucked away in the corner, is located in what would formerly have been referred to as the reception area when Churchill lived at the property 

Designed by Sir Ernest George and Harold Peto in 1888, the home sits within a terracotta mansion block in Westminster.

It acted as a base from which Churchill launched his political career as he lived at the address when he first became MP for Oldham in 1900.

He lived there from 1900 to 1905, publishing his first book – Ian Hamilton’s March – and penning his famous resignation letter in which he defected from Tory to Liberal. 

The apartment boasts a principal suite overlooking the street with a further guest double bedroom. Its reception room is stylishly dressed in monochromatic fabrics, with plush seating and a marble fireplace. 

This is the sprawling living area of the flat in Mayfair, central London, where six huge windows allow natural light to flood in the apartment, which sits above a cigar shop offering memorabilia themed on past prime ministers

Natural light floods in from six windows at the front of the property and there is a smart dining table tucked into the corner of the reception room.

A bespoke kitchen is fitted with integrated Miele appliances and mirrored splashbacks, all finished in a cream hue for a bright and fresh feel. 

Throughout the 1,055 sqft apartment, the design focuses on a clean aesthetic with glamorous furnishings. The grand Principal suite has bespoke mirrored wardrobes and has an en suite bathroom with a shower and bath tub.

Flat where young Winston quit the Tories and learned to love the high life 

When he was in his mid-20s Churchill would don a glossy top hat, starched wing collar and frock coat as he set out in Mayfair. 

While living in the apartment, he was known around central London for carrying a walking stick as well as sporting a watch chain.

His Mount Street flat was the setting for his dramatic defection from Tory to Liberal as he penned his resignation letter there. 

The young politician lived close to the luxury Coburg hotel, which has since been renamed The Connaught. It delivered meals to the nearby residents.

Churchill regularly ordered takeaways to be brought up to his pad at 105 Mount Street, nurturing what would become a lifelong love of champagne and fine food.

While the bachelor lived at the flat, his girlfriends included Pamela Plowden, American actress Ethel Barrymore and  Muriel Wilson. 

Doorways to the homes on Mount Street were much wider than the average residential entrance, owing to the fact the buildings were originally women’s fashion outlets.

The wide passages were designed to allow Crinoline petticoat skirts to be able to pass through. Since Churchill’s time at the house, a cigar shop has opened underneath the flat, which also sells Churchill-related memorabilia.
