The Voice Australia mocked for ‘milking contestants’ trauma’ for ratings

Viral video mocks The Voice Australia for ‘milking contestants’ trauma’ and focussing on overly-dramatic sob stories to win ratings

The Voice Australia may have switched networks and debuted a new judging panel this year.

But there’s one thing that hasn’t changed – the show’s over-egged portrayal of contestants’ sob stories.

This week, a viral video surfaced on Instagram poking fun at the latest season for ‘trauma milking’ yet again to win ratings.

‘What trauma defines you?’ A viral video has surfaced on Instagram poking fun at The Voice Australia for its over-egged portrayal of contestants’ sob stories this season. Pictured: Celebrity coach Rita Ora

The clip, created by Australian meme account Pinacoladaboys, featured a montage of clips of this season’s contestants describing their tragic backstories, interspersed with clips of the celebrity coaches with Rita Ora, Guy Sebastian, Jessica Mauboy and Keith Urban laughing.

It was  accompanied by a caption that sarcastically read: ‘What trauma defines you?’

The video stars with a shot of British songstress Rita exclaiming, ‘I’m really excited to see what Australia’s got!’ as Keith giggles in a high-pitched tone next to her.

A clip then played of contestant Darren Constable mournfully describing his financial struggles as a professional musician

‘I got really homesick, I was sick of being broke, asking for money from my mum,’ he lamented.

This clip was followed by footage of Guy Sebastian cackling.

The irony: In the final shot, Darren Constable is seen beaming at producers and declaring: 'Enjoy the show!''
