The WAGS of the US Open: Players’ partners, girlfriends, wives as tennis championship approaches

We are just days away from the highly anticipated US Open – which will kick off on Monday, August 29, and conclude on Saturday, September 11, and will see the world’s top tennis players face off in Queens, New York City to find out who will be crowned as the champion.

The event, which is one of the oldest tennis competitions in the world and is now watched by millions across the globe, is the fourth and final Grand Slam tournament of the year after the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon.

Many acclaimed athletes will be facing off this year – including Daniil Medvedev (who holds the current number one spot and won last year’s US Open), Alexander Zverev (who is considered the second best player in the world), and Rafael Nadal (who is ranked at number three) – and they will all most likely be accompanied by their stunning wives and girlfriends.

Russian-born Daniil, 26, first met his wife, Daria Medvedev when he was only 12 years old. Daria was eating at a restaurant with her mom, while Daniil was competing on the tennis courts right outside.

She told Tatler Russia that she and her mom decided to stay and watch the match, which went on for more than three hours.

‘He used to fight till the end. He was prepared to do anything on court, no matter how ugly his game may look, in order to win,’ she recalled. ‘In this sense, he hasn’t changed at all.’

The two soon became friends, and started dating years later – in 2014. Three years into their relationship, the couple moved to Monte Carlo, Monaco, where they still reside now.

According to MarieClaire, Daria studied journalism at Moscow State Institute of International Relations. She played tennis as a teen, and planned to go professional one day – before an injury left her unable to pursue the sport.

But Daria’s knowledge of the sport has only strengthened their relationship, with Daniil previously telling the media, ‘It’s great that she understands tennis… Perhaps it’s not easy to get used to it when you don’t understand anything in tennis. It helped me to become better as a person and a player.’

Daniil called the moment that he proposed to Daria the most significant moment in his career.

‘She’s one of the most important members of my team,’ he said during a press conference in 2019. ‘She gave me a lot of confidence. I always say that it’s the moment I made the proposal to her, that’s when I started to go up. She does a lot for me in order for me to play better tennis.’

The couple got engaged in May 2018, when he proposed during a romantic trip to Rome. They officially became husband and wife in October 2019, during a lavish Majorca wedding.

Back in 2020, the athlete admitted that his family is more important to him than his tennis career.

‘The reality is simple: You can have all the titles you want, but if you don’t have the capacity to be able to enjoy life with people that you love, and that love you, what does anything else matter?’ he asked ATP Tour.

‘It’s a little difficult for us, because she lives in London. But thankfully it hasn’t brought us to extremes,’ he said. ‘She comes to some tournaments to support me and so we can spend some time together. She is my best friend… We talk every day, for two or three years now.’

Theodora, who doesn’t use social media and maintains a generally private life, also plays tennis in her free time.

‘When I play with her, it is my favorite moment on the court,’ gushed Stefano. ‘It brings a huge smile to my face.’

‘I’m Morgan, I traveled the world on the ATP tour with my boyfriend, who is the number one American tennis player,’ she said in it. ‘I know that tennis is relatively uncool and unknown in America, so here’s what you should know.

‘Unlike most sports, tennis is a year-round sport except for four weeks off in December. Players compete in tournaments in 31 countries in cities like Dubai, Paris, Shanghai, London, Rome, Cabo, and many more.

‘What are they playing for? Besides glory and hundreds of millions of dollars in prize money, players are competing for points. Each tournament gives a certain amount of points and the better you do, the more points you get.

‘The more points you have, the higher your ranking is. And your ranking basically refreshes every year. No pressure.

‘Tennis tournaments are not your casual sporting event with hot dogs and beer, you can expect champagne, strawberries and cream, Nobu, and getting to wear really cute outfits.’

Before Morgan, Taylor was married to fellow tennis player Raquel Pedraza – whom he wed in 2016 at the age of 18. They welcomed a son together in 2017, named Jordan Fritz, but announced that they were divorcing in December 2019.
