The world’s first heated razor gives a remarkably smooth shave

Gillette Heated Razor

£199, selfridges.com

It wasn’t so long ago that disposable razors had a mere two – or, God forbid, one – blade, rather than the three or five we enjoy today.

Whenever anyone mentions a new, innovative razor is coming, I find myself thinking, ‘Please be seven blades… or nine!’

Sadly, Gillette’s latest innovation isn’t a washboard-like array of blades – but it might actually be even sillier.

The swivel-headed razor (if you’re wondering what the doughnut-style hoop is for, it’s just for looks) sits on a plinth, flashing gently as it charges up wirelessly

It’s the world’s first heated razor… and it somehow costs £200, for a razor with a heated plate just below the blade. The idea is that it’s like a hot-towel shave at a barber, but in your bathroom, at 20 times the price.

It certainly makes an impact. The swivel-headed razor (if you’re wondering what the doughnut-style hoop is for, it’s just for looks) sits on a plinth, flashing gently as it charges up wirelessly.

It glows orange when you switch it on and you can hold the button to adjust the temperature (the lights in the handle fade to yellow as you turn it down).

The Heated Razor is the first-ever product from Gillette Labs (Gillette’s new experimental division), and while it’s gloriously silly, I have to admit it’s actually pretty good. The blade heats up to about 50C and maintains its temperature even when you’re washing it. It feels great to use and, crucially, you never worry about slicing your face open and simultaneously cauterising the wound.

The swivelling head gives a remarkably smooth shave, too. I just wish it wasn’t so expensive. Naturally, it won’t work with the razors for anything else, and a pack of eight refills costs £50.
