Although Nicole was tearful following the mother-of-three’s energetic performance to Jennifer Lopez’s Ain’t Your Mama, she praised the hopeful’s attempt and called her an ‘inspiration’.

Following Tracy Leanne’s elimination, Nicole also said her and fellow judge Simon Cowell were sad to see the Middlesex talent go because she was the ‘heart’ of the show.

The American music star said: ‘Simon just said: “She is the heart of the show”. And she is still going to be the heart of the show.’

Nicole appearance comes after it was reported that head judge Simon Cowell is planning to bring Cheryl back onto the judging panel next year, to replace Nicole, in a rumoured £1.5m deal.

The star, who stepped out of the spotlight to raise son Bear, seven months with boyfriend Liam Payne, wowed viewers when she joined Simon at his judges houses round in France.

A source told The Sun: ‘It looks like Cheryl will be back next year. Simon knows Nicole is likely to leave and he wants a big name, and some much-needed glamour on the panel.

‘He knows he will get that with Cheryl and she would be a really popular signing and a huge hit.

‘He is a huge fan of hers and has been turning on the charm to ensure she comes back. They have had several meetings about it and Simon has had his top people on the case to make sure it is all sorted.’

The insider added that fellow judge Louis Walsh played a huge role in getting Cheryl back onboard, with Simon feeling they need someone younger on the panel when Nicole leaves.

Keeps coming back: Cheryl ‘s involvement in The X Factor has been a tumultuous affair – having been hand-plucked from Girls Aloud by Simon Cowell to join the judging line up in 2008, she went with the show to the US in 2011 but was fired

An X Factor spokesman said: ‘Everyone is focused on the current series of The X Factor at the moment. No formal decision will be made on The X Factor judging panel for 2018 until next year.’ MailOnline had contacted representatives for Nicole and Cheryl for comment at the time.

Cheryl, who first sat on the judging panel in 2008, has won X Factor twice in the past, with Joe McElderry and Alexandra Burke.

She left the show in 2011 to join the ill-fated US version of the X Factor but was sacked by Simon after just two audition rounds, and replaced by Nicole. The Parachute singer returned in 2014 and 2015 but left the following year.

While Louis Walsh and Sharon Osbourne have confirmed their return, Nicole is still unclear on her plans for next series of the ITV singing competition.

Speaking to OK! Magazine, the Hawaii born star confessed: ‘I’ve been asked to return and hopefully we can make it work.

‘I love it so most likely I will come back. I never know what’s going to happen but The X Factor feels like family to me.’

Nicole continued: ‘The show is too much fun for me not to come back. I love this job and I love this country.’
