Thierry Henry has arrived in Canada ahead of being formally announced as Montreal Impact’s new manager.

The Frenchman was surprisingly named as Wilmer Cabrera’s successor at the MLS club on Thursday, signing a two-year deal with the option to extend by a further year.

Henry was greeted at the airport by Montreal fans and took time to sign autographs and pose for pictures with them while wearing the club scarf.

The 42-year-old, who will officially take over the reins at Impact in mid-January when the MLS pre-season begins, is taking his first job in management since he was sacked by Monaco at the beginning of this year.

Henry will hope for a better outcome this time, having lasted just three months at his old club after registering four wins in 20 games.

The Arsenal legend is familiar with the MLS, having finished his playing career in the States with New York Red Bulls, where he scored 52 goals in 135 appearances during a four-year spell at the club.

‘It’s an honor to become head coach of the Montreal Impact and return to the MLS,’ Henry said in a statement following his shock appointment.

‘It’s a league that I know well where I had a great time. Being in Quebec, in Montreal, which has a huge multicultural heritage, is something extraordinary. I have always had an eye on this club and now I am there.’

Henry is in Canada finalising the last few details before being presented to the media on Monday.
