There was major disappointment in Melbourne on Saturday as Jamie Murray was knocked out of the men’s doubles with partner Neal Skupski to American duo Steve Johnson and Sam Querrey.

Rafael Nadal did his bit in setting up a potential clash with Nick Kyrgios, while number two seed Karolina Pliskova was sent home from the women’s singles in another big upset.

Meanwhile, Coco Gauff seemingly can’t be stopped with another dazzling performance, this time in the women’s doubles.

Jamie Murray and Neal Skupski suffered a major disappointment as, after saving six match points they eventually lost their second round 4-6 7-6 7-6 to American Steve Johnson and Sam Querrey, losing the deciding tiebreak 14-12. 

Joe Salisbury and Rajeev Ram are safely through to the last sixteen, this morning beating American Tennys Sandgren and Jackson Withrow 6-3 6-3.

The best doubles result of the day was Neal’s older brother Ken Skupski combining with partner Santiago Gonzalez to beat second seeds Lukas Kubot and Marcelo Melo 7-5 7-6.

Nadal moves dream Kyrgios match up a step closer 

Rafael Nadal kept up his half of the bargain in setting up the fourth round that everyone wants to see, the potential clash against Nick Kyrgios. 

The Spaniard was disdainful in his dismissal of compatriot Pablo Carreno Busta, beating him 6-1 6-2 6-4 in just 98 minutes. 

He was left waiting to see if Kyrgios could beat powerful Russian Karen Khachanov in the feature evening match of the third round, starting around 8am UK time.

Big names exit once again in the women’s singles 

The upsets in the women’s singles kept coming after the thumping upsets that were witnessed on Friday. 

Number two seed Karolina Pliskova continues to be the player who cannot get over the line at Grand Slams. The latest disappointment for the statuesque Czech came when she was beaten 7-6 7-6 by Anastasia Pavluychenkova of Russia. 

That helps open up the draw for former champion Angelique Kerber and for Simona Halep, both of whom won.

Coco Gauff is on a rampage

There is no stopping Coco Gauff, who is not content with knocking out defending champion Naomi Osaka from the singles. 

Fresh from that triumph she was back out on court in the doubles, this time in the more humble setting of court number eight. 

Combining with her friend Caty McNally they defeated number eight seeds Kveta Peschke of the Czech Republic and Holland’s Demi Schuurs 6-3 6-4 in the second round of the women’s doubles. Gauff is due to play 14th seed Sofia Kenin in the fourth round tomorrow, local time.
