You just need to pay attention to certain vital things when they are conducting a background check on you. After all, you have made hard efforts to get this job, and you wouldn’t want it to be ruined just because you accidentally provided some incorrect information.

It is Not A Reference Check

A background check is very different from a reference check. When you apply for a job and are asked to provide references from your previous colleagues or bosses it means they want to reach out to that person to inquire about you. In that case you are in advantage because you will be able to prepare that person beforehand. But with background check they do a little investigation on you to verify your information and to get some insight into your past. They will also look for a criminal record or any other unlawful activity you may have been involved in. This will include your driving and financial history as well.

Preparing Your Background Information

There are specific details that your employer would need before they provide you a signed offer letter. First you need to make sure that your necessary background information is in order. They will verify your identity, education, and employment. To verify, stay prepared ahead of time keep your driver’s license and provincial card with you. Have your transcripts ordered from the school and make a set of copies as well, in case the employers want to keep a copy. Also contact your previous employer and make sure that the information they forward to your new employer is entirely correct.

After that you need to get your personal background information in order. You will need to provide information regarding your financial status, driving abstract, and criminal and civil litigation records. They would like to know how much credit you have in your bank account, were you ever in any debt and have you earned what you claimed in the documents. You will also need to get your T4 tax receipts and copies of your credit records from Canada’s main credit bureaus, i.e. Trans Union Canada and Equifax. In case if you are applying for the job of a driver you will need your driver’s record as well, for which you can apply on provincial government’s website. And lastly you will need a certified criminal record check from RCMP. For that, all you need to do is to go to the nearest police station and provide your fingerprint. If you were ever involved in a criminal case and were not pardoned, it is critical that you apply for it right away.
