This Is Us fans have a heart breaking theory about the flash forward at the end of the season three premiere.

In the short glimpse into the future, viewers saw a scruffy, graying Toby (Chris Sullivan) alone in bed reading. As he talks to Randall on the phone, he takes his glasses off with his left hand and viewers see he is without his wedding ring. The scene has led fans to believe his marriage to Kate (Chrissy Metz) will crumble amid their quest to get pregnant.

In reference to the scene, one Twitter user said: ‘So is it Kate they’re going to see?! Do Kate and Toby get a divorce? Nooooo.’

Some This Is Us fans speculate that Kate and Toby will divorce as a result of their baby quest, others fear Kate may die in childbirth

Others speculate that Toby and Kate’s marriage survives the in vitro fertilization process, but that Kate dies somehow — possibly from complications related to the birthing process, which her doctor repeatedly warned her about.

In the scene, Randall (Sterling K. Brown) and Tess (Iantha Richardson) call Toby on their way to visit a mystery woman. Viewers are split on who she may be.

One This Is Us fan speculated: ‘My theory is Kate dies giving birth and “HER” is their daughter! Just because Kate isn’t with Toby doesn’t mean “HER” is Kate.’

The look into the future came after Kate and Toby learned their doctor decided to allow them to do IVF, despite Kate’s weight being a potential hazard. 

After getting the news, Toby decided to dump his anti-depressants — which the doctor previously told him may be lowering his sperm count — into the toilet.

Previews for upcoming episodes show that Toby’s unchecked depression will create a rift between him and Kate, but will it be big enough to cause them to split?

Some believe the ‘her’ in question may be Rebecca. Fans theorize that she’s hospitalized and dying and Randall, Tess and Toby are simply on their way to say goodbye.

This Is Us Episode 2

This Is Us Episode two will have a strong focus on Randall. A preview for the episode opens in the past, showing Randall getting his Howard University acceptance letter.

Meanwhile Kate’s eating to cope while Kevin’s turned to alcohol and mom Rebecca (Mandy Moore) is oblivious to it all.

Another teaser for the show, set half in the past and half in the present, suggests viewers will get to watch as Toby manages withdrawals from his medication.
