This is what 51 looks like: Personal stylist reveals her top tips for staying youthful

Gillian Williams lives in Cheshire with her husband Simon and two children, Freddie, 14, and Olivia, 12. She’s a personal stylist and blogger.

MIDLIFE INSTAGRAMMER

At 46, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I had a double mastectomy. It took over my life for two years, and had a huge impact on my self-confidence. Afterwards, I realised it was time for a new chapter. I changed careers and become a personal stylist. I now post daily on my Instagram, fashionrocks01. It’s given me a new focus and keeps me positive.

ALOE SKIN SAVIOUR

I have terribly sensitive skin and used to react badly to products — from Clarins to Clinique and even Simple. But I haven’t had an allergic reaction since switching to The Body Shop’s Aloe range. It’s fragrance-free and has no added preservatives. I love the Soothing Day Cream (£13) and Calming Cream Cleanser (£8), which have a lovely light consistency. It is a relief to find something that works for me.

TINT YOUR LASHES

The pigment in my brows and lashes has faded with age. To add definition, I tint both (£35), every six weeks. It means I can wear minimal make-up — just a flick of lipstick and bronzer for a healthy glow. I prefer a natural look, as I find too much make-up is ageing.

TRY SLOW EXERCISE

I used to do a lot of hardcore exercise: running, spinning, weight training and boxercise — a class a day. I was exhausted by the end of the week. But during my cancer treatments I had to give it all up. It changed my approach to fitness. I now go for lower impact, sociable workouts, such as yoga, tennis and powerwalking with friends. I have more energy and feel it’s better for my body.

THE NO-DIET DIET

Since I hit the menopause, I’ve struggled to slim my tummy. At first, I tried to diet more: lots of low-calorie soups, for example. But I wasn’t full, so I just snacked more. Now, I do the 16:8 intermittent fasting diet, where I only eat in an eight-hour period. However, I eat two big meals for lunch and dinner, so I feel fuller for longer. It’s helped me to avoid bloating and stay in shape.
