Matalan unveils its latest charity collection to support Alder Hey Children’s Charity – featuring family pyjamas starting from just £8.50

High street retailer Matalan has released its latest collection to support Alder Hey Children’s Charity. 

The UK retail giant has been supporting the Liverpool hospital by releasing a limited-edition range each year since 2014. 

The partnership has so far raised £3.2million in funds to support the build of a new state-of-the-art Surgical Intensive Care Unit (NICU), on the site of Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.

The Matalan x Alder Hey 2022 collection features adult PJs for £12.50, children’s PJs for £8.50, a £5.50 babygrow and a £5.50 outfit for pets. 

The pyjamas are available online and in selected stores. 

In previous years designs have included spots, stars, stripes and positive slogans, with celebrities such as Alesha Dixon, Denise Van Outen and Mark Wright amongst those who have supported the campaign.

This year’s PJs feature colourful rainbow striped sleeves and bottoms and sport the slogan ‘Let’s Be Happy Together.’

Children across the UK were given the opportunity to design the 2022 PJs. 

Maiya Ariss-Johnson, seven, was the lucky winner of the competition with her joyful design, which also features Alder Hey mascot ‘Oli The Elephant.’  

One of this year’s charity ambassadors is four-month-old Frankie and his family from Wallasey. 

Frankie was diagnosed with gastroschisis before birth, meaning he would be born with his bowels on the outside of his stomach.   

Following his birth at Arrowe Park Hospital, Frankie needed to be immediately transferred to Alder Hey for surgery to put his bowels back in the right place.

The final ambassador is Niamh, (pictured in the arms of mum Emma) who at only a couple of weeks old had multiple surgeries following doctors' discovery of her coarctation of the aorta which is a potentially life-threatening condition

Frankie’s mother Jessica is supporting the Appeal which is helping keep families together, she said: ‘I couldn’t be prouder of my son and I couldn’t be more grateful for every single staff member at Alder Hey’

Another ambassador is Charlie and his family.

At six days old, Charlie suffered an apnoeic episode and kidney failure following the discovery of a blood clotting disorder. 

Charlie and his parents then spent four weeks at Alder Hey, but they are now home and reunited with Charlie’s five year old sister Mia.

His mother Laura said: ‘All of the staff in ICU, HDU and 3B were amazing in our time staying at the hospital.’

The final ambassador is Niamh, who at only a couple of weeks old had multiple surgeries following doctors’ discovery of her coarctation of the aorta which is a potentially life-threatening condition.

She spent her recovery in Alder Hey’s Cardiac Ward, and mother Emma said: ‘All the staff at Alder Hey were incredible from start to finish. It really is a special place with special people.’
