Thomas Meunier branded PSG’s shock Champions League elimination by Manchester United, ‘the biggest joke in football history’.

The Belgian defender missed both legs of the last 16 tie this season and watched the French club throw away a two-goal first-leg lead by losing the home game 3-1.

A last ditch penalty, that the referee referred to VAR, was converted by Marcus Rashford to end PSG’s Champions League dream for another year.

Many tipped Thomas Tuchel’s side to go deep in the competition and clearly the loss still infuriates Meunier.

He told VTM Nieuws: ‘It was the biggest joke in the history of football. I would have bet €1million that we would not lose.’

The 27-year-old had been linked with a move to Old Trafford this summer but those plans now seem dead in the water.

And Meunier has spoken about his desire to stay in the French capital and sign a new deal to have another crack at Europe’s top prize.

‘The Champions League is still the major problem, he added. ‘

‘I want to stay. We have been talking about a contract extension for a while, but there’s no offer on the table anymore. I’m ready to stay in Paris. Everybody knows.’

Liverpool overcame Tottenham to win the final on Saturday. PSG strolled to the Ligue 1 title to qualify for next year’s tournament and face a battle to keep hold of their star players, including Neymar.

Tuchel will be desperate to retain the club’s firepower and launch another assault on the Champions League next season.
