Thousands arrive in rural Nevada as ‘Storm Area 51’ event kicks off

Two people have reportedly been arrested as the ‘Storm Area 51, They Can’t Stop All of Us’ event kicks off in rural Nevada.

Around 100 people arrived at a gate outside the highly classified Air Force Base in the early hours of Friday morning  to mark the kick off of the three-day event.

While the mood was mostly jovial, with attendees dressed in costumes and brandishing placards, two people were arrested according to The Associated Press.

The news agency said it wasn’t immediately clear if a woman who began ducking under a gate and a man who urinated nearby were arrested after the crowd gathered about 3 a.m. Friday.

Lincoln County Sheriff Kerry Lee is scheduled to hold a press conference updating media on the events later on Friday.

More than 2 million people have said they are ‘attending’ the ‘Storm Area 51’ event and more than a thousand tourists have already descended upon the tiny towns of Rachel and Hiko, located close to the highly classified Air Force Base.

The two towns have a combined population of just 175 people, with many locals wondering whether their community can cope with an influx of people after an invite to the extraterrestrial-themed event went viral on Facebook back in June.

Around 1500 revelers have arrived near Area 51 – long thought to harbor government secrets about alien activity.

The Air Force has issued stern warnings for people not to try to enter the Nevada Test and Training Range, where Area 51 is located.

Meanwhile, Lincoln County Emergency Manager Eric Holt has stated that extra personnel and resources are on hand should the number of attendees swell into the weekend.

‘We’re in coordination with several other operators to ensure the safety of our residents and visitors to the area,’ he told the Las Vegas Review Journal on Thursday.

‘We are preparing for the worst and hoping for the best. If we don’t get the numbers for what we’re prepared for we can send some of the resource home. If we need it we can have it.’

Holt said between 5000 and 50,000 people could flock to the area.
