Thousands of homes in northern New South Wales and south-east Queensland have spent Christmas in darkness due to power shortages.

More than 13,000 homes were left without power across south-east Queensland on Christmas night, as severe storms battered the region.

Damaging winds and rain hit several areas as 13,587 homes lost power in Brisbane City, the Gold Coast, Logan, Moreton Bay, the Scenic Rim and Redland City by 8pm, the ABC reports.

Several severe weather warnings were issued but were later cancelled, as energy company, Energex, tried to reconnect homes on Christmas.

Meanwhile, thousands of homes on the New South Wales north coast lost power over the weekend. 

Power shortages began in Port Macquarie on Sunday night, while homes in Bondi and the lower north shore were without from Saturday.

Storms in the northern regions knocked over power lines and trees, as Essential Energy advised over 7,200 homes to prepare to be without power for 24 hours.
