Thousands of racegoers celebrate the last of the Melbourne Cup Carnival at Stakes Day

As the last race event of Melbourne Cup Week came to a close on Saturday afternoon, racegoers were making sure they made the day count.

Thousands of people didn’t let the tighter security checks and intensified police presence get in their way as they partied at Flemington Racecourse for Stakes Day.

As the horses were taken off the track, so were the heels, fascinators and jackets as the 60,000-strong crowd finished what seemed like an endless race season with a bang.

For the first time during the Melbourne Cup Carnival, racegoers were individually scanned at the entrances to the track.

Security also closely inspected every racegoers’ bag, which caused lengthy queues and delays, following Friday’s Bourke Street terrorist attack.

Victoria Racing Club said there was a ‘sizeable security and policing operation’ in place.

However, this did little to dampen the spirits of racegoers, with the crowds energy ramping up even further as the sun began to set.
