It is believed a cable was hit when contractors were conducting civil works for an apartment development.

Lawyer and Exetel customer Stephen Goddard said that he was unable to work because their was no access to the web.

‘It’s not like I live out in the middle of nowhere — I’m on Elizabeth Street,’ Mr Goddard told the ABC.

‘They told me it won’t be restored ’til tomorrow — that means I’ll be out for 48 hours.’

Some frustrated web surfers who had services disrupted took to social media in search of answers.

One Twitter user asked where those affected would be paid compensation for the inability to access online.

‘When will the internet be back in Sydney? what caused the outage and when will it be fixed? will consumers be compensated for the daytime hours without internet coverage? its so hard trying to do university assignments without internet,’ wrote the young woman.

Another man was hopeful the telecommunications company would prioritise fixing the outage.

‘Could you get your asses in gear in fix this outage please. Spoken to two people in the past 24 hours and I still have no internet’.
