Three-bedroom home goes up for rent for vegan tenants only

A quaint, three bedroom home in Perth’s inner-suburbs has been listed online for just $320-per-week, but there’s a catch – tenants must be vegan.

The Gumtree advert was posted by Shree, a Hare Krishna at art gallery Sacred India, who has been practicing veganism for 35 years.

‘It’s our lifestyle we’ve lived many years. We think it’s better for the planet, better for the environment,’ he told Daily Mail Australia.

The house is owned by a close family friend of Shree’s who is currently living overseas.

‘I honestly believe the energy of the house is really good and this keeps it that way,’ Shree said.

‘I consider a unique selling point rather than a negative.’

The 53-year-old said although the listing may seem odd to some, it is no different to traditional expectations from landlords.

‘People say: “How can you expect others to abide by this?” This is our ideal tenant, others’ are young professionals, ours are someone who is vegan or vegetarian,’ he said.

Shree said he has received backlash from the post, with some ‘trying to work around the point’ and pretending they don’t eat meat and others making angry phone calls.

‘Someone objected on the grounds we were discriminating against non-vegetarians,’ he told Daily Mail Australia. ‘He contacted me to make a firm statement.’

‘He was cold, collected and firm.’

Despite their particular criteria, Shree said they have had no trouble finding regular tenants and have no plans to allow meat-eaters.
