Three classic red carpet poses to wow this festive season

A professional photographer has revealed three classic red-carpet poses that will ensure your festive photos have an A-list quality to them.

While the tendency may be to stand still and grin aimlessly (especially after one or two seasonal tipples), knowing a few insider tricks can transform how your social media snaps look this yuletide.

The secret to being uber photogenic, according to expert snapper Steve Granitz from Getty Images, is all about what you do with your hands.

Scroll through red carpet images of celebrities attending high profile events and you’ll see three poses often emerge.

There’s the ‘hands in pockets’ – a favourite of Victoria Beckham, the one ‘hand on the hip’ and then ‘the lean’, essentially both hands gently resting by your sides.

Alexa Chung almost never deviates from the latter while Cara Delevingne, unsurprisingly considering her day job, regularly rocks all three stances.

Here’s what Granitz revealed to online fashion bible Whowhatwear about mastering the perfect posture for yuletide photos.

THE HAND ON HIP

Expert photographer Granitz says that simply placing a hand on your hip and relaxing your shoulders is a ‘classic pose’ that creates the much-coveted triangle shape.

Many a star on the catwalk has relied on this stance, which is made perfect by edging one leg forward slightly.

HAND IN POCKETS

An easy way to appear confident and take the worry over where to put your hands while posing is to place them in your pockets.

The pose suggests a ‘ready for business’ demeanour, and, according to Granitz, the key is to put hands in lightly to avoid adding ‘bulk’ to the body’s frame.

He adds: ‘A little lean to one side adds shape and movement.’

THE SLIGHT LEAN

The simplest look to get right, hold this pose well and you’ll never appear like you’re trying too hard.

Keep one foot in front of the other, says Granitz, and then lean backwards a little.

The real plus-side of this look? It makes almost everyone who tries it look a little taller and a little slimmer – and with the festive season in full swing, that can never be a bad thing.
