Britain’s wet weather will continue for some parts of the country today with August rainfall already above the national average ahead of a 86F (27C) Bank Holiday weekend.

Temperatures are forecast to build until Sunday but not before downpours hit northern areas until Friday, with outbreaks of rain expected in some southern parts before high pressure moves in.

But experts said this weekend could also see a ‘south-north split’ as colder downpours continue in northern England and Scotland.

At least 94mm of rain has fallen across the UK between August 1 and 17 – about five per cent above the national average for the entire month, according to the Met Office.

Meteogroup said today will be fine, dry and warm with sunny spells in southern and eastern England, with showers for Wales, northern England and eastern Scotland.

Tomorrow will be bright for many, with showers in the west, and strong winds in some parts, but will be warm for southern and eastern parts of England. The conditions will continue into Friday, with outbreaks of rain in the north and dry and sunny in the south.

Met Office spokesman Nicola Maxey told the Evening Standard: ‘We have a south-north split with the possibility that the north will likely hang onto this unsettled period we’ve been having.

‘We are at the midpoint (of the month), but in some cases, we have seen well above the average rainfall.

‘Whether we are on track for a record-breaking month is too early to say.’

The figure is still ‘a way off’ the wettest August on record, which saw 167.6mm of rainfall in 1912.

Central and southern England are expected to see the warmest weather of the bank holiday, while temperatures across northern areas of the UK will be lower, with conditions likely to be more changeable.

Average rainfall across England so far this month is 68.6mm.

Scotland (141.8mm), Wales (120.2mm) and Northern Ireland (103.1mm) have seen considerably more, but only Wales and Scotland have seen above average rainfall so far this month.
