A toddler is dead after being hit by a vehicle outside a Melbourne childcare centre.

The three-year-old girl from Broadmeadows was hit in the car park of Kiddy Palace Learning Centre on McDonalds Road in Epping about 4.45pm on Monday.

Emergency services were called after the girl was hit by a car that was reversing outside the centre. 

Detective sergeant Daryll Out told the Herald Sun that the incident was a ‘terrible accident.’

‘We certainly urge anybody who’s around children to be very careful and mindful that terrible accident such as these can occur if everyone is not paying full attention to what they doing,’ he said.

Aerial vision showed the childcare care centre taped off with police and emergency services at the scene.

McDonalds Road was briefly closed for the investigation but has since been reopened. 

Children were seen playing in an outdoor playground close to police and detectives on the scene.

The driver of the vehicle is helping investigators.

A woman has been taken from the scene to Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition.

Detectives remain on the scene, and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
