A mother has revealed why she’s been stockpiling for the past four years – as panic buyers keep their pantries and fridges fully-stocked in fear of coronavirus lockdown.

Tiffany, from Victoria, said she started bulk buying items after she fell ill during her pregnancy with her first child in 2015.

As she was unable to work for the next nine months, she decided to stock pile on basic ingredients and half-price products to ensure she never runs out of food.

Her fully-stocked pantry she prepared long before the COVID-19 outbreak includes dried pasta, tinned vegetables, sauces, taco kits, rice, baked beans and cereal.

She also has a designated shelf for all her cleaning products, personal hygiene and toiletries such as toothpaste, mouthwash, cleanser, makeup remover and more.

‘I’m a stockpiler. Not a bargain hunter, not a panic shopper. A stockpiler. ‘Me and hubby have been stockpiling for four years now ever since we had our first child,’ Tiffany said in a Facebook group.

‘I was extremely sick during my pregnancy and in hospital and out of work for 9 months meaning some weeks we could not afford food. That’s when we decided to start stockpiling.

‘This current stockpile has taken me four years to build up. No one has ever had a problem with it, until COVID-19 happened.’

Since the coronavirus pandemic, the mother said they family has been called horrible names such as ‘selfish, disgusting and hoarders’.

‘People laugh at us etc. But none of our food goes to waste, and it means we don’t have to face the craziness at the shops right now,’ she said.

‘I do regular shops each week that are not huge and not expensive either. Either way, if we go into lockdown I guess we will be fine due to our four years of stockpiling.

‘People can be awful about it but it’s taken me a long time to get a steady amount of stock that does not need refilling often. Believe it or not, the only thing I never stockpiled was toilet paper, now I can’t get any.

‘Please note all of this was purchased well before the coronavirus happened. I’m not that rich to buy it all in one week.’

Lynette said she started stockpiling more than 30 years ago so she could keep the cost of her grocery bills down to feed her family.

‘When I was doing temp work I used to stock up on certain things like shampoo, feminine products, toothpaste etc so I would not have to buy these things when I was unemployed,’ she said.

‘After going onto the disability pension I started to stockpile more seriously as I often could not get to the shops easily.

‘I stockpile so that I could cut down on my groceries if I had a high power bill or an unplanned vet bill and also to take advantage of sales.

‘I hope that after all this is over Australians will realise the need to have at least a small stockpile in case the unexpected happens again.’
