A clever shopper whose old faux leather couch was flaking away has shared how she restored the piece of furniture using an unlikely $12 buy from Kmart.

Sharing impressive before and after images on Facebook, Heather revealed she stapled charcoal grey tablecloths from the department store to make the lounge look brand new.

The L-shaped cream couch was overused and in need of restoration, and the $12 linen-look tablecloth ‘worked wonders’.

‘So the ‘leather’ couch started flaking so badly, rendering the couch useless,’ Heather wrote online.

‘Kmart tablecloths and a staple gun and we got to few more years out of the couch!’

In the comments Heather said she removed as much of the original flaky faux leather as possible before stapling the new material over the top.

‘The cushions were attached to the couch, so I stapled underneath and through to behind cushions,’ she said.

‘The cushions are not separately recovered, but look like one long cushion in finished couch.’

After 72 hours the social media post went viral and was ‘liked’ by more than 18,000 people who were impressed by the transformation.

‘Looks awesome! Great job, saved yourself over $2,000 on a new lounge,’ one person wrote.

‘Wow that’s absolutely amazing!’ another said, a third added: ‘What a smart transformation! Love the fact that you totally turned it into a new looking piece of furniture rather than throw it and buy something new!’

The idea inspired hundreds who were on the verge of throwing out their old couches.
