An escaped wallaby’s chances of survival are on a knife edge after a gang of laughing teenagers gleefully shot the defenceless animal in a naked attempt to inflict pain.

Armed with catapults, the thugs chased the terrified macropod through a Windsor park on Wednesday before pelting it with lead projectiles and leaving it sprawling on the grass.

And as the wallaby lay twitching on the ground, one of the five youths, believed to be aged 15, said: ‘He’s shot the kangaroo. The lead shot busted it. Kill it boys, it’s wicked.’

The appalling act of cruelty, which happened near a children’s playground on Allen Way in Dachet, Berkshire, has left the wallaby fighting for its life with only a 50 per cent chance of surviving its wounds.

‘At first the lads thought it was a hare which was lying down on the floor, so they shot it,’ a source told the Sun.

‘It’s jumped up and started running off, but then it started falling over.’

Shocking video footage shows the thugs running after the wallaby as it bounds across the park.

One yells ‘look at the kangaroo boys!’ before the animal suddenly buckles and flops to the ground.

The area, which is less than two miles from Windsor Castle, reportedly has a problem with a specific gang which targets wild animals.

One resident said: ‘Last month they kicked a seagull like a football in front of everyone. It died 15 minutes later…

‘Anything that flies will be shot at — they’ve even killed swans.’

Matthew Ford, who works for animal rehabilitation group Specialist Wildlife Services, wrote: ‘It is currently resting, but there is a 50 per cent chance it will die from stress.’

A police spokesperson said: ‘Thames Valley Police was called at around 5pm on Wednesday to reports that a wallaby had been seen in a park in Allen Way, Datchet.

‘The wallaby was safely recovered and is now in the care of wildlife experts.’
