TikTok video of Woolworths trolley disinfection ‘car washes’ is slammed by American viewers

Aussie shopper’s video of Woolworths new trolley ‘car washes’ is slammed by American viewers over a bizarre detail

  • A viral video of Woolworths trolley disinfection units has been slammed in the US
  • American viewers ridiculed the word ‘trolley’, saying it should be called a ‘cart’
  • Others were baffled to see Aussies at Woolworths – it closed in the US in 1997
  • The clip, uploaded by Sydney mum Shereen Chadoud, has 4.1million views

A shopper who shared a viral video of Woolworths new trolley disinfection stations has been ridiculed by American viewers over her choice of words.

Sydney mother Shereen Chadoud recently filmed herself testing the sanitiser machine at the Bankstown store in a clip that has attracted more than 4.1million views on TikTok.

But viewers from the US took issue over her use of the word ‘trolley’, dishing out ‘hate’ to Ms Chadoud in a series of comments that insisted they should be called ‘carts’ instead.

‘It’s called a shopping cart, NOT a trolley,’ one person wrote.

A second said: ‘Looks like a shopping cart to me.’

Others were baffled to see Australians shopping at Woolworths, which closed its last American outlet in July 1997.

‘They still have Woolworths?’ one woman wrote, while another wondered: ‘How is Woolworths still around?’

Ms Chadoud addressed the controversy in a second video uploaded on Friday, titled: ‘It’s a trolley.’

‘To all the hate I got on my last post, specifically to my US followers – in Australia we have Woolworths and we use a trolley not a cart to put our shopping in,’ she explained in the clip.

Australian viewers jumped to her defence, with one writing: ”Why is it that every time ANY country does something or says something that is a bit different, America is always ready to fight?’

A second added: ‘You do realise people call things different names in different countries? It’s not wrong because you say so.’

The drama kicked off after Woolworths installed new ‘car washes’ to disinfect shopping trolleys in supermarkets across Sydney’s most Covid-ravaged regions.

Shoppers living in one of the 12 LGAs of concern – the epicentre of the Harbour City’s current outbreak – are now using the machines to minimise the spread of the highly contagious Delta strain.

The cleaning unit claims to leave a trolley ‘virus free’ in less than two seconds.

Where are Sydney’s 12 LGA areas of concern?

  • Bayside
  • Blacktown
  • Burwood
  • Campbelltown
  • Canterbury-Bankstown
  • Cumberland
  • Fairfield
  • Georges River
  • Liverpool
  • Parramatta
  • Strathfield
  • Some suburbs of Penrith

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Woolworths for comment.

Ms Chadoud was among the first to share footage of the new machine on social media, showing viewers how it works by pushing the trolley under the unit to be sterilised.

‘Thank you Woolworths for looking after us,’ she wrote on TikTok.

The machine seems to be more efficient than other cleaning methods on offer in supermarkets across the country where customers are strongly encouraged to wipe the trolley bar handles with disinfectant wipes and use hand sanitiser.

Ms Chadoud’s video has been viewed more than 4.1million times since it was shared online in August.

The launch comes months after the disinfector was first trialled at Woolworths Oran Park in April.

‘As a food retailer, we already have very high standards of cleaning and hygiene in our supermarkets including the thorough cleaning of high touch point areas including trolleys,’ a Woolworths spokeswoman told Daily Mail Australia at the time.

‘As part of our COVID safe program we are trialling a bespoke customer trolley disinfectant unit, which enables customers to push a trolley into a dedicated standalone unit where it is sprayed with disinfectant.’

Shopper Sarah decided to test out the new trolley disinfector after she spotted the unit at her local supermarket store in Sydney

The representative continued: ‘By completing the cleaning process in under two seconds, the initiative is proving very popular with customers looking for a fast, efficient and fun way to clean their trolleys.’
