Tim Sherwood believes Timo Werner will ‘struggle’ to cement a regular place in Thomas Tuchel’s starting XI this season.

Werner was heavily criticised for his first season in the Premier League, but did help Chelsea secure a top-four finish and win the Champions League.

However, Sherwood says Werner will need to ‘show the manager that he’s got more than just the press’ and insists he must ‘show some quality’ to maintain a place in the team.

Sherwood told Premier League productions: ‘Everyone thought that Timo Werner and Kai Havertz would be nailed on starters for Chelsea because of the German connection.

‘But I think Werner is going to struggle. I think he needs to show the manager that he’s got more than the press, he needs to show some quality.

‘He’s done that in other countries, we saw him as a top scorer in Germany. But we see so many players come over and struggle.’

Sherwood also shared his thoughts on Saul – who struggled on his Premier League debut, playing 45 minutes against Aston Villa before being hooked off at half-time.

Many Chelsea fans called his performance ‘garbage’ and he subsequently sat on the bench during Chelsea’s opening Champions League fixture against Zenit St Petersburg.

Sherwood said: ‘Saul is a superstar in Spain with Atletico, he comes to the Premier League and it was all too quick for him.

‘Hopefully he settles and I’m sure he’ll improve, but I don’t think these players will get forever to improve.

‘They need to start showing their worth otherwise they’ll be left out and eventually they’ll be moved on.’

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel explained why he he subbed Saul off during their 3-0 win over Villa by saying: ‘Well, it was hard to do it but I had the feeling he struggled.

‘He had some big mistakes, passing mistakes and errors and he struggled with the intensity and you could see that he has not fully adapted.

Chelsea will be back in action on Sunday when they face Spurs in their Premier League clash at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
